FOOTBALL.

The trial match at tbe Newtown Park on Saturday was not a success. The players assembled at the stated time, only to find that the absence of a ball made it impossible to commence the play. Overtures were made to a number of small bovs who were playing in tbe vicinity with a view of getting tne loau of a ball. The boys, however, were not disposed to lend at first, but eventually, about an hour and a quarter after the ;iine the match thould have begun, one of the young footballers reluctantly parted with the ball, remarking as he did bo, that the seniors “would have to pay for it if they busted is. There was now only time for about halt an hour’s play, but the tw.» fifteens went at it merrily. When time was called the Colors had defeated the Blnee by tour tries and a

goal to a try. The scores were made for the Colors by Ellison, who obtained two tries, Richardson (Athletics), who also got two, and Heberts, who got one. For the Blues, King got a try. Concerning the play generally, it is difficult to form any definite opinion, because the game was not long enough to bring out the points of the varions playere. As most noticeable, however, we may mention, among the backs Roberts, McCausland, Hirschterg, and Pearce ; and among the forwards Ellison, Taiaroa, King', Storey, and William-. The match between the Poneke fiecood and Petone first, for the Junior Cop, took p'ace last Saturday, and resulted in a victory for the Red and Black’s (Poneke) by 4 points to nil, The game was uninteresting from the beginning to end. In the firet spell Roberts (Petone) attempted a pot, w'bich resulted in a -''poster. Johnson obtained a try for Poneke in this spell, from which Blaeklock failed to place a goal. In the second spell Johuson again got over the line, and after a maul with the Petone full-back, obtained another try ; Blaeklock failed also in this place. For the Petone team Roberts played ar prand game, while | Brown, Blaeklock, Robinson, and Johoeon showed best form for the Poneke team. The match Committee have chosen the following trial fifteen to play to-morrow at KewtowD, play to commence at 3 o’clock sharp :—Full back, Stock ; three quarter backs, Pearce, McCausland, Thomson ; half •backs, Roberts, Moorhouae ; forwards, Cooper, Ellison, King, Mclntyre, Reader, Smith, J. The Athletic captain (Burnes) won the toes, and elected to defend the southern goal, Little kicking off for the Dark Blue 3, and Wales returning it with a good drop. From the throw out the game became very fast, considering the nature of the ground, Daunt, Barnes, Kennedy, and Gibbons, for the Athletics, and Kilner, -Jacka, Little, and Osborne, for the Unions, playing bard games. The Blue forwards breaking away in a scrimmage, carried -the ball into tbe Athletic twenty-fives, where, from a neat pass, Kilner found his way over the line. Rigg took the kick, a difficult one, and failed to place a goal. The rest of the spell was very evenly contested, time being called with the ball in the centre of field. Wales started the second spell with a good kick, and the Blue and Black forwards following up smartly, obliged the Unions to act on the defensive for some time, Jacka eventually relieving hitv side with a good punt into touch. Some scrimmaging now took place in the Athletic quarters, (Joltman and Smith both having “pot shots” at goal, a force-down resulti -g ia each case. Tittle also got a mark and placed the ball for Rigg, who made a splendid shot at goal, the ball just falling a trifle short. Little got the second try juafc on the call of time, the placekick was, however, unsuccessful, and the game ended as above. For the winners Kilner played splendidly, and was well backed up by Jacka, Rigg, Smith, Parsons, Little, Jeffreys, Osborne, and Mouatier ; whilst Gibbons, Wales, Daunt, Fraser, Burnes, Kennedy, Gardner, and Campbell were the pick of tbe other side, Daunt and Wales in par- • ticular playing very well. A match was played in the Hobson-street paddock last Saturday between the Rival third and Welcome first, resulting in a win for the former by seven points to love. Cooper placed a very nice goal from a try obtained by Uaddon, and Toomafch obtained the other try.
