THE NEW HEBRIDES.
By Eleotbio Telegraph—Copyright, (beuteb’s telegbams.) Melbouene, May 28. His Excellency the Governor has received a telegram from Lord Granbille, Secretary of State for the. Colonies, informing him that Her Majesty’s Government have deferred sending a definite reply to the proposals of France, regarding the occupation of the New Hebrides, until they are in receipt of despatches from the various Colonial Governments, setting forth their views on the matter. Lord Granville adds, however, that the French Government have been informed of the probable nature of the reply.
(SPECIAL TO UNITED PBESS ASSOCIATION.) London, May 30. Earl Granville hesitates to permit the formal announcement to the "Victorian Parliament of the refusal of the English Government to grant the French proposals concerning the New Hebrides, and he has written to Mr Berry stating that he is unable to go beyond the answer already gi?en by
Mr Morgan, Under-Secretary for the Colonies, until the official despatches on the subject arrive. Mr Berry is not satisfied with this, and will endeavor to have another interview with Earl Granville, and possibly with Mr Gladstone.
