ADDITIONAL AUSTRALIAN.
(Per s.s. Rotomahana, at Auckland.) (united press association.) Sydney, May 28. The question of payment of members has been affirmed by the Assembly, and it has been resolved to bring in a Bill to give effect to the decision arrived at. The resolution for new Customs duties having been passed, a Bill was brought in and passed its initial stages. Several members have informed the Government that they intend to oppose these dutieß step by step, and take advantage of all forms of the House to prevent them passing. A large meeting held in the city has decided against the new duties as destructive to trade. Several large steamers have been laid on for Kimberley. Lord Carrington visited the Victoria yesterday, previous to her departure, and inspected all the arrangements. A large number of persous are leaving from here for the new goldfield. The death i 3 announced of the Hon J. B. Sutter. A fire took place at Leichardt on Monday night, by which a fireman named Fisher was killed and several others injured by falls of i walls. Mr McElhone is spoken of as a probable candidate for the vacancy in the Assembly. Melbourne. The Government will submit a proposal to the Assembly for increasing the number of portfolios to ten, but no Minister will be appointed until the House expresses an opinion. The Woolgrowers’ Association are busily making out a scheme for establishing woollen factories in China and Japan. Nothing has been arrived at yet by the Opposition as to the action to be taken respecting the assembling of Parliament.
Adelaide. The Governor’s Speech opening Parliament is condemned as inconsequential and failing to grasp the serious nature of the situation. Mr J. Coles leads the Opposition, and he will move a direct vote of want-of-confidence on Monday. A Chinese Restriction Bill, a Real Property Amendment and Mining Bill, also Private Property Bills have been introduced.
