TE ARO RECLAMATION AND WHARF.

The following letter was received by tbe City Council last night week from the Sec: etary to the Harbor Board “ Wellington, New Zealand, May 20th, 1886.—The Town Clerk, Wellington.—Dear Sir,—ln further reply to yours of the 13th instant covering resolutions arrived at by the City Council on the 11th instant, I have tbe honor to inform you that those resolutions have been fully discussed at a special meeting of the Harbor Board held this afternoon, and that the following resolutions have been adopted: 1. That the Harbor Board agree to erect a wharf at Taranakistreet on'the Council completing the reclamation a 3 far as Taranaki-street on the Bft- line. 2. That the present intention is to provide a depth of water sufficient for vessels drawing 22ft, between the 12ft and Bft lines beyond Cuba-street, but that outside the 12ft line From the Queen’s Wharf as far as Taranakistreet no limit of depth of dredging is to be imposed on the Board. 3. That the Corporation undertake to give up all rights over the bed of the harbor outside the 12ft line from the Queen’s Wharf to Taranaki-street, and that a lease for fourteen years at a peppercorn rental be granted for the bed of the harbor between the 12ft and Bft lines between Cuba and Taranaki-streets, and that in the event of the lease being terminated without the option of a renewal for at least seven years on the same terms, the Corporation shall pay to the Board half the cost of

the wharf, or wharves erected on the ground | leased. 4. That tfce Board will consider ; favorably any applications by the two boating clubs for sites having sea frontages for the erection thereon of boatsheds. 5. That, preparatory to the Council passing a Bill through Parliament, the Committee be instructed to confer with the Finance Committee of the Corporation with the view to arranging the terms on which the money is to be paid over, and that they report the same to the Board. It will be understood by tbe Council that the words '* as far as Taranaki-street ’ in tbe above resolutions include the area beyond Taranakistreet that is required as an. approach by water to the proposed Taranaki-street wharf, as may be mutually agreed upon. Trusting that these resolutions will form the basis of a satisfactory settlement, I am, sir, yours faithfully, William Ferguson, Secretary.” It was decided to refer the letter to the Special Harbor Board Committee of the Council, with instructions to bring up a, report on the proposals at the next meeting of the Council.
