Co.. have purchased the steamer Australia. She is intended to run in the ss Maitai’s place in the East Coast trade, the Maitai to be again put in the West Coast coal trade. The Australia is a twin screw steamer, built at Dumbarton in the latter part of 1884 ; 458 tons gross register, 260 tons net register. Length, 150 ft 4in; breadth, 26ft lin ; depth, 15ft. She has two pair of engines, compound condensing, vertical inverted, of 77 horse-power ; steams 10 knots on nine tons of coal in 24 hours ; length of stroke, 22in ; diameter of cylinders, two 16in, two 32in. She has accommodation for 32 saloon passengers and 20 steerage ; carries a large cargo on a light draught of water, and is built with the most modern improvements. The barque Examiner arrived in the harbor from Newcastle last Friday afternoon. She reports leaving Newcastle on May the 7th. She experienced strong westerly winds till off Cape Farewell, when she encountered heavy gale from the SE, which compelled her to run into Blindßay.wheresheremained under canvas tack and half tack for three days. There were several other vessels in the Bay with her—the barques Presto, Kate Tatham, Silver Cloud, and the whaler Othello, from Norfolk Island, with 40 tuns oil on board. After leaving Blind Bay the Examiner experienced moderate weather till off the Heads on Wednesday, when a fierce gale from the NW blew her back to Cloudy Bay. The weather moderating, she came into port. She has a cargo of coal, consigned to the Brunner Coal Co. The S.S. and A. Co’s ship Crusader left London for this port on the 28th March. The following passengers are booked for Wellington :—Saloon —Mr and Mrs Aid rick, Messrs J. Swanton, Peter Henn, Leslie Thompson, and C. Gaisford ; second saloon —Messrs T. White, Clias. Rothnam, and R. Benton ; 6 steerage. The N.Z.S. Co’s R.M.S. Kaikoura, arrived in the harbor on Saturday afternoon at 1 o’clock, after a smart run of 23 hours from the Otago Heads. The Japanese ship of war took her departure from the man-of-war anchorage at .3.30 Monday afternoon. She is bound for Fiji. A barque was seen off Stephen’s Island Wednesday morning by Captain Whitwell, of the Charles Edward. She will probably prove to be either the Chasca, from New York, or the Carnarvon Castle, fiom Liverpool. The U.S.S. Co’s ss Manapouri left Melboure on the 12th, arriving at the Bluff on the 16th ; called at Port Chalmers on the 18th ; left Lyttelton at 8.30 pm on the 19th, and arrived here at 10 am last Friday. She experienced fresh southerly winds to the Bluff, thence fine weather to arrival. The Manapouri sailed, for Auckland and East Coast ports same evening. The U.S.S. Co’s ss Penguin arrived in port at 9am last Friday morning: She left Onehunga at 8.30 am on Tuesday ; arrived off New Plymouth same day at 9.30 pm ; left again next morning at 5.30, reaching Nelson at 9 pm ; left that port for Picton at 10 am on Thursday ; arrived at Picton at 5.20 pm ; came on to Wellington at 4 last Friday morning, arriving as stated. The Penguin sailed for Lyttelton at 8 pm same night. The U.S.S. Co’s ss Wakatipu left Port Chalmers on the |lßth at 6.30 .pm, arrived ac Timaru at 8.30 am next day, sailed again 11.50 pm for Lyttelton, reaching that, port at 9.50 am on the 20th, left again on Friday at 11.15 pm, arriving here on Saturday afternoon. She experienced light variable winds along the coast. She brought up a large quantity of cattle and horses. The cattle were shipped at Timaru, and the horses at Lyttelton. She left at 6.30 pm on Saturday for Sydney, via Taranaki.
The Northern Steamship Co’s (Auckland) ss Gairloch arrived in the harbor at 8 o’clock Wednesday morning from Manakau and New Plymouth, having left the latter port at noon on Tuesday. The Gairloch was brought out from Home about IS months ago for her present owners. Since her arrival she has been running in the trade between the Manakau, Waitara, and Taranaki, Her register tonnage is 187 tons. She has passenger accommodation for 47 saloon and 20 steerage, the accommodation being excellent.. She came to this port for the purpose of being cleaned on the Patent Slip.
