After thegale, had moderated westerly winds till off CapeLeuwin, which was passed on the 21st in lat 146 S. Here a fearful gale set in from the SE, with terrific sea. The seas were making clean sweeps over her, taking everything before them. She shipped one sea that came on with such tremendous force as to wash one of' the boats clean out of the davits aft on to the deck forward, completely staving the boat in. Another sea flooded the second cabin, and smashed the galley in, rushed in to the galley and carried a large pot overboard. On April 26th passed the meridian of Tasmania in lat 47 S. After the storm she had frequent westerly gales down to within a hundred miles of the Snares, where she met another strong SE gale. THE JAPANESE CORVETTE TSUKUBA. The Tsukuba which arrived in port on Monday evening from Sydney, is a wooden vessel of the corvette class, and was formerly one of Her Majesty’s fleet, being then named the Malacca. She was built in Shinagawa, a portnear Yokohama in 1851, and has therefore seen 35 years of service, 25 of which have been, under the Japanese flag. Like H.M.S. Wolverene in all essentials, the Tsukuba is a sightly-looking craft, and carries her age jauntily, the general opinion being that she. is a thoroughly staunch and sound vessel still,, and good for many more years of useful work. Her principal dimensions are length 220 feet, beam 42 feet, and depth hold 28 feet, her displacement being 1978 tons. . As the Tsukuba is only used as a training ship, her armamentis neither modern nor heavy, there being only eight broadside guns, two field_ guns, and onegun for boat service, the big guns beingKrupp’s 64-pounder muzzle-loaders. The vessel is rigged as a ship, and under canvascan do very well ; but in addition she has an auxiliary screw, driven by engines cf the old type, and of 350 horse-power, with which shecan make eight knots. Every part of the ship seems to be in good order, and she appears to be well adapted for the purpose *-<> which she is devoted, viz., the training of officers and seamen. The officers’ accommodation is allotted', in much the same way as is the case on British vessels of the same class ; and the interior of the rooms is bright and attractive. The ship’s company numbers altogether 328' officers and men, 30 being officers, 19 cadets, and the remainder petty officers and men. The following are the names of the principal officers : —Captain Fukushima, Commander Hirayama, First Lieutenant Kano, Second Lieutenant Nakao, Third Lieutenant .Nayamini, Fourth Lieutenant Iwasaki, Navigating Lieutenant Inouye, Chief Engineer Yoshimi, Paymaster Abe, Surgeon Kimura. Captain Fukushima served his time in the Japanese Navy, arid is a member of the order of the Rising Sun (Kiokuzitsu) of Japan (3rd class). The crew generally are small but lithe-looking fellows, and are dres- ed after the same style as our own, and the officers, petty officers, &c., have a very similar uniform to that worn in the Royal Navy. The Tsukuba will remain here for about ten days, when she proceeds to Fiji and Honolulu, and thence to Yeddo,. where ends her cruise.
