New Zealand Mail Office, Thursday evening. During the week the only arrival of an English vessel has been that of the ship Oamaru, from London, with a cargo for Wellington, Business is still quiet, no large trade lots of goods changing hands, and only ordinary trade going on. Sugar is unchanged in price. There is a considerable quantity of China sugar in the market, but quotations are without alteration. Currants are also unaltered, and little business is being done in them on account of the high prices, Tinned salmon is very scarce. Only old stocks and outside brands remain on hand, and these are variously quoted at from 7s 9d to Bs. The new season’s stocks will not arrive for two months. Lobsters are also scarce. Quotations are from 9s fid to 9s 9d. Candles are still exceedingly low in price, and the old stocks are being sacrificed to make way for incoming supplies. The stock of kerosene is large, and a further arrival is expected within a week. Prices are still low.
Dunedin, May 12. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited) report (per Mr D. Stronach) as follows : —256 cattle were yarded. Best bullocks brought LS to L 9 7s fid; ordinary, L 4 5s to L 7 10s ; beef, 17s 6d to 20s. Sheep—2ol7 were penned. Best crossbred wethers brought 8s to 10s fid ; others, 5s fid to 7s 9d ; best crossbred ewes, 8s to 10s 3d ; ordinary, 5s 6d to 7s 9d, No merinos were penned, mutton brought Id to ljd per lb. 301 lamb 3 brought 3s to Bs. There were 551 pigs. Good sized stores brought LI to L 3 ; porkers, 10s to 15 ; baconers, 20s to 35s ; about 2d per lb. Christchurch, May 12. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited), report (per Mr E. G. Stavely) as follows :—At Addington yards to-day about 8000 sheep, a moderate entry of cattle, and 650 pigs were yarded. The sheep supply exceeded the demand, the sale fluctuating considerably. We topped the marked for fat sheep, with prime wethers at 14s. Others brought from 8s to 11s. Ewes and mixed sexes brought Gs to 9s 6d; best merino wethers, 7s to 9s fid. Values were unaltered, mutton bringing lJd to Id to gel per lb. There was little demand for store sheep. Crossbred lambs brought 2s, 3s and 4s fid ; store crossbred wethers, 5s Id to 5s lOd. There was a short supply of beef, and good quality improved, but other sorts were unchanged. Bullocks brought L7to L 7 15s; cows, L4to L 6, being 16s to 20s per 100. Store cattle were quiet. Springing heifers brought L 7 17s fid ; 3-year-old steers L 4 ss. Bigs were dull, and values remain at last quotations. Baconers brought 30s to 43s ; porkers, 11s to 21s.
