FATAL BOAT ACCIDENT.

(united press association.) Bluff, August 27. On the return of the Harbor Board’s tug Awaroa from Stewart Island on Tuesday evening Captain Tyson reported that a boat accident occurred on Monday in Paterson’s Inlet, off Native Island. It is feared that three men, named William Chasland, William Fortune and John Brown, were drowned. The boat left Kapitiki about 11 a.m. to go to Ringaringa to attend a Native funeral, and was last seen under sail off the east end of Native Island, with a squall coming on. A rudder was found next morning on Buller’s Poiut. The boat, which was a large one, formerly belonged to the steamer Tararua, being the one the mate landed in. Captain Tyson took a search party of five and steamed round several islands, but found no trace of the missing men. No further tidings have been received.
