THE HOSPITAL COMMITTEE.

THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND MAIL. Sir, —The public will be glad to see that you are advocating the change in the management of the Hospital that was proposed some days ago by a writer in your columns, and since agreed upon by the Committee —namely, to make the Resident Surgeon responsible for the treatment of all cases in the Hospital, and so practically do away with the visiting staff. The objection that will doubtless be raised, that the assistance of and consultations with doctors in town when required will cost a great deal in fees, can be met by the probability that all the members of the profession in town would be glad to give their services as freely as has been done in the past at the Hospital and to the benevolent institutions, and as is done now in other towns in the Colony where the proposed system is in operation. The visiting staff at present costs nothing in fees at all events, aud in future a saving may possibly be effected in the directio'n of the misuse that is said to have been made of the Hospital by mecical men as a general receiver of troublesome and unpaying patients. The Committee have taken the right step in carrying Mr Nathan’s motions. It remains to be seen whether they will act with due dignity in insisting on the Government putting them into effect, or taking the only other manly course, which it is surprising they have not already done, and sending in their resignations at once. Why, it may be asked, has not Dr. Grabham been consulted on the matter 1 His opinion surely ought to be decisive. It is also the duty of the Committee to guard against the possibility of jobbery in the appointment of nurses to the Hospital. If they do not make it their business to inquire into this subject, it is not difficult to foresee a sscond scandal, not about the dismissal but the appointment of nurses, and that in a short time. . One word is said to be enough to the wise—-

how many are necessary for this Hospital Committee ? —I am, &c., Triviator. Wellington, Ist September.
