CORRECT TRANSLATION.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES Sir, —ln a paragraph in your issue of this morning some doubt is thrown upon the proper rendering of the Hebrew word for virgin in Isaiah vii. 14. The word is “ almah,” and used, only in three other places ; but there can be no doubt as to its meaning. In Genesis xxiv. 43 we read, “When the virgin cometh forth to draw water.” Here the word is “almah,” and most certainly Abraham’s servant expected that the wife he was seeking for Isaac would be “ almah.” If there had been any doubt this “almah” is described at the 160 as one altogether pure. The word used here is the more common word “ bethulah.” In the Septuagint translation, made by men who understood both Hebrew and Greek thoroughly, the corresponding word to that in Isaiah vii., 14, is “parthenos,” and no one can doubt what is the meaning of this word. But it needs no knowledge of Hebrew or Greek to decide the question, for what force would there be in the words used by Isaiah if the word “ almah ” be taken to mean female -only I —l am, &c., A. Stock. August 18.
