Waitara, January 28. Arrived, 6.50 pm—Hauraki, from Wellington, via Opunake. Dunedin, January 28. Arrived—Rotomahana and Southern Cross, from the North. Sailed—Rebecca Crowell, for Auckland : Hauroto, for Sydney, via Wellington: Manapouri, for Auckland. The Southern Cross, after an overhaul, will go to relieve the Suva in the Fiji trade, to enable the latter to receive an overhaul.

Captain F. Holmes, recently of the Union Steamship Company’s s.s. Taiaroa, has been appointed commander of the Mahinapua, as Captain Bernech has taken charge of the company’s new steamer Ohau. Mr Grant, chief officer of the Penguin, has been promoted to the command of the Taiaroa.

The Union Steamship Company’s steamer Waihora left Melbourne oh the 13th instant, called at Hobart on the 15th, reached the Bluff at 5.30 am on the 19th, and Port Chalmers at daylight next day ; left again at 6 pm the following day, arrived at Lyttelton at 9 am on the 22nd, leaving again at 8 pm, and arriving here at 11 am last Friday. She had fine weather with variable winds to Lyttelton, thence strong head winds. She sailed Friday night for Sydney, via the North, taking on the Auckland part of the lonic’s cargo.

The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company’s chartered steamer Coptic left Rio de Janeiro for London on the 15th instant, her frozen meat being in good order. She left here a day later than the New Zealand Shipping Company’s R.M.S.S. Kaikoura, which left Rio four days earlier than the Coptic. Sailing vessels (other than intercolonial trading vessels and coasters) entering the ports of Kaipara and, New Plymouth will be liable to a rate of 6d per toil register for lighthouse dues ; and intercolonial trading sailing vessels and steamers (except coasting steamers) will be liable to a rate of 4d per ton. No charge is to be made for coasting vessels. The Union Steamship Company’s newsteamer Ohau arrived here from Port Chalmers, Oamaru, and Lyttelton at 11.30 am on Saturday, having leit the last-named port at 4 pm on Friday. She sailed again the same evening for East Coast ports and Auckland. The Ohau is to be employed in the cargo trade on the East Coast of both islands. A description of her has already been published. The following are her officers : —Captain. Bernech ; chief officer, Mr McGall; second, Mr Maundrell; purser, Mr Campbell; chief engineer, Mr Cunningham; second, Mr Williams; third, Mr Cooper. iThe New Zealand Shipping. Company’s ship Piako is now nearly a full ship, and is expected to get away for London early next week.

The Union Steamship Company’s steamer Rotorua left Nelson at 6 pm on Tuesday, and experienced strong westerly winds with thick, squally weather, which greatly delayed the passage, the steamer being hove-to for some 4 hours owing to the thick *fogs. She arrived at Pictpn at 6 am on Wednesday ; sailed again at 8 am, and had strong head winds, with thick weather to arrival at 1 pm. She sailed for the South on Wednesday evening.

The Shaw, Savili, and Albion Company’s chartered steamer lonic sailed for Port Chalmers at 6.30 am on Wednesday. The Shaw, Saviil, and Albion Company’s ship Halcione, Captain Parker, left London on December Bth, and passed Deal on the following day. She brings the following passengers for Wellington : —Saloon : Mr F. W. Cunningham, Mr G eorge Greenwood ; Second Cabin : Mrs M. Gregory, Miss Eliza Gregory, Master Arthur Gregory, Master Charles Gregory, Mr J. P. Coulson, Mrs Coulson, Master Albert Coulson, Miss Gertrude Coulson, Alice Worsman; Third Cabin: Ered. Carter, Mrs Carter and five children, Thos. Calvert, Mrs G. Calvert and three children, Wm. King. The Stanley left New Work for Wellington on November 26. Iler agents are Messrs W. and G. Turnbull and Go.
