THE MAIN TRUNK LINE.

(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Napier, October 2 0.

The following resolution was passed at a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce y e^ ei ‘‘ day “ That this chamber is of opinion tha., concurrently with the construction of the main trunk line of railway, there should be made a line from Napier .o some convenient point on the trunk line, thus bringing Hawke s Bay into direct; connection with Auckland; that ukis chamber believes that such a line could be easily and cheaply constructed via Patea, and that it would opea up a large extent of most fertile land ; and that the members for Napier, Hawkes Bay, and Waipawa be asked to arrange with the Government to have a survey made, and also a report on the quality of the land that would be opened up by such a line,” It was stated that there was reason to

believe the natives would make considerable cessions of land, as the line would p»SB fhrough a large block of native country.

The Taupo correspondent of the Herald writes that a gold prospector eeking for the ysllow metal near Ruapehu, has found indica* tions of what promises to be a good coal seam at a place about six miles from the Marton line of railway.
