SPORTING NOTES.

Anent the recent Caulfield meeting <• Augur” ih the Australasian says Helene had plenty of admirers (for the guineas) but Sandal was absolutely friendless, and if any bookmaker had been asked to lay a he -would ha - e unhesitatingly chosen Sandal, whose owner had instructed Mr Barnfield to scratch her if he considered it advisable ; hut as she was liable for the whole stake, he thought it better to start her on the off chance. Mr Watson was not very happy in the start, which was of a very straggling nature, and Sandal who was one of the first off, seemed to fairly revel in the soft going, •while Rufus and Tremando were beaten before they had gone a quarter of a mile, and Merrimu suffered from the same inability to act. Skimming over the ground with all the lightness of a fawn, Sandal soon had all of her opponents in trouble, for while she trod the earth with almost fairy lightness, most of the others were ploughing into it, and struggling on against insurmountable difficulties. Gratitude, who held the lead, kept her country-woman company, but a quarter of mile from home her jockey was using his utmost endeavours to keep on terms with Sandal, upon whom Trahan never had to move, and without beiog really extended the rank outsider won the Guineas with the greatest of ease, to the evident gratification of the ring men, who indulged in the customary jubilations characteristic of them when a non-favorite wins. Helene got third, so that the whole of the situations fell to the South Australian fillies. Sandal is not a big one, but she is a filly of most exquisite quality, with light and quick action, just suited to such a slough as she had to go through on this occasion. Although running in Mr Gordon’s name she is the property of her breeder, Mr W. Blackler, who leased her to the A.R.C. Secretary, and Gratitude alto belongs to the proprietor of the Fulhampark stud. She is by the imported sire Winterlake from the imported mare_ Instep, and a glance at her pedigree will satisfy the breeding student that on the dam s side she could not be surpassed. Although running in Mr J. D. Robertson’s colours, Precious Stone (winner of the Joorak Handicap) is still the property of Mr Samuel Gardiner, who leased him for a couple of years. The colt belongs to that old Juliet family, over whom I have sung so many paens ; and as a yearling he was a great fancy of mine. Having been foaled with a crooked hind fetlock nobody seemed to care for him, though as he entered the sale ring Joe Morrison quietly remarked, “ I would give LSOO for him if he hadn’t that crooked leg ;’’ and I never shall forget the look of disgust that came over the face of the Bnndoora-park studmaster when the munificient sum of 12 guineas was all that was offered for him. He sent him to New Zealand, but, as in the case of Coriolanus, whom he also sent south, he couldn’t find a purchaser. The result was he had to keep him, and this seems to have been a fortunate circumstance, for there can he no doubt that up to a mile, at all events, he is a good colt. I think he can get further. We shall fee, , Mr P. Butler has scratched Charmer for all events at the C. J.F.C. meeting. The following acceptances have been received for the Oamaru Autumn Meeting : Derby, 1885. Messrs Stephenson and Hazlett having been strongly recommended to buy her. BETTING MARKET. Another week has passed by,and yet there is nothing of note to record. Vanguard has hardened in price, and is now quoted at 100 to 18 offered, while in consquence of some slight support being given to Nelson, and Johnny Faulkner giving a good account of himself in his work, the pair have gone up to 100 to 15 offered. July, Tasman, and Necklace have slightly weakened, and are now quoted [at 100 to 8, at which price Liverpool has received a little support. As regards the Derby,Liverpool is still favorite at 2 to 1, but on Trenton being backed by his owner for two “conies ” lo beat Liverpool, the son of Musket* advanced to 3to 1. Black Rose having arrived safely from the north, 100 to 15 is the best price now in offer about the colt, and at that price he has been backed to win a hundred or so. Martini. A meeting of the stewards of the Welling, ton Jockey Club was held at the club’s office on Tuesday morning, when the summer programme, as drawn up by the subcommittee appointed for that purpose, was approved of. The principal race is the Wellington Gold Cup, of 500 sovs., with a piece of plate of the value of 100 sovs, presented by the citizens of Wellington. This is the largest stake ever given for a race in Wellington, and from the moderate nomination fees, &c., should ensure a very large entry. The big race on the second day is a handicap, value 200 sovs. One of the leading features throughout the programme is the small amount of entrance money. It having been intimated to the stewards by a large number of shopkeepers and traders that Friday and Saturday are most inconvenient days on which to close, the days originally fixed namely, 30th and 31st January —have, in deference to their wishes, been changed by the stewards to Wednesday and Thursday, 4th and sth February, 1885. This is a step in the right direction, and we heartily wish the new club every success for its plucky venture.
