PUBLIC MEETING AT INVERCARGILL.
(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Invercargill, October 22.
At a meeting of citizens to-night the following resolutions were passed : —“ That this meeting strongly press on the Government the desirableness of the speedy completion of the authorised portion of the Seaward Bush and Toitois Railway, as the work is equally important to the town of Invercargill and the agricultural and saw-milling district that it is intended to open up ; that this meeting regards the large area of 17,500 acre 3 of bush land reserved in view of the construction of the railway as a legitimate source from which funds for its prosecution should be obtained, and would respectfully urge upon the Minister of Lands to order the survey of the reserve in suitable blocks for sale. That the Government be respectfully requested to take steps to have the district between the terminus of the twelve miles authorised of the railway to Toitois surveyed, with the view of releasing 4000 acres of land reserved from purchase and settlement ; pending such, that the membersof Assembly for the district be requested to do their utmost to secure the authorisation and survey of the remaining ten miles, or thereabouts, necessary to carry the railway to and across the Mataura River, so as to tap the Toitois District.” Copies of the resolutions will be forwarded to the district members with a request that they lay the same before the Government.
