[Age Specials.] Per s.s. Te Anau at the Bluff. THE MURDER OF CAREY". SENSATIONAL DETAILS. FURTHER DYNAMITE PLOTS. (UNITED press association. London, July 31. More detailed reports concerning the murder of Carey show that Carey’s wife and children were passengers on board the same vessel. O’Donnell is also a married man, and was keeping company with Carey’s wife and family. It is authoritatively stated that O’Donnell was an emissary of the American Fenians, who despatched him by the steamer Melrose for the express purpose of assassinating Carey. Upon the arrest of O’Donnell his cabin was searched, and amongst the luggage in his possession an infernal machine was discovered. JBromthis it is believed that if O’Donnell failed to kill Carey in aDy other manner he was commissioned to secure his object by the destruction of the vessel. Carey never spoke after the shot was fired. His body was landed at Port Elizabeth. The wounds showed that O’Donnell had fired twice ; one shot taking effect in the neck, and the other lodging in the back. After the occurrence Carey lived twenty minutes before death supervened. O’Donnell has been placed in prison, strongly guarded, as an attempt at rescue is anticipated. Later. It has been ascertained that the other Irish informers who left on board the Pathan endeavored to persuade Carey to accompany them, but that he refused to go. At a preliminary examination held at Port Elizabeth into circumstances connected with the assassination, evidence was given that O’Donnell, who was charged with the crime, had been on a visit to Australia recently. The Nihilists have recommenced their agitation in Russia, and a -number of arrests have been made by the authorities. August 1. Usibepu, the chief who recently defeated Cetewayo, repudiates the idea that he has any pretensions or desire to be appointed king. During the week severe shocks of earthquake have been experienced at Oporto (Portugal), and also in California. August 3. An attempt was made to-day to blow up a linen factory at Cupar, Fife, the principal city of County Fife, Scotland. The proprietor’s attention being directed to a number of suspicious circumstances, he caused the building to be searched, when a large quantity of dynamite was discovered secreted on the premises. August 5. The Po3t and Despatch both contain articles severely commenting upon the action o t the Imperial Government in deporting Irish approvers to the Australian colonies. They characterise the course adopted as an insult to the colonies generally, and express their warmest approval of the prompt measures taken by the Australian Governments to prevent such characters from -landing. Mr Trevelyan, the Chief Secretary for Ireland, refuses to state whether the informers on. board the Pathan were despatched by that vessel with the knowledge and acquiescence of the Government. Tho Hon. Ivo Bligh is organising a cricketing team to play an All England Eleven which is to be selected for an Australian tour. The match will be played at Scarborough in September. The rumor that Mottley, one' of the men who gave evidence against Kelly during the Phoenix Park murder trials, had been assassinated at Philadelphia has been officially denied.
In consequence of the independent attitude assumed by the English authorities in connection with the proposed second Suez Canal, Da Lesseps displays a disinclination to grant the concessions previously demanded. He is now endeavoring to re-open negotiations with the English Government.
The estimated average yield of the cereal crop of the United Kingdom, based upon returns so far obtained from the harvest, is 20 bushels to the acre. The return of wheat shows a large decrease upon that of last year.
