The announcement of Sir Julius "Vogel's defeat in his candidature for the representation of the Falmouth borough in the Imperial Parliament, is to be found in our European telegrams. We are amongst those who sincerely regret the knight's rejection, for we hold that Sir Julius Vogel in Parliament would be a very much more able advocate of the colony's interests than Sir Julius "Vogel out of it, and simply the Agent-General. His defeat, however, is not surprising, for running the Falmouth constituency in the Conservative ticket was a hazardous experiment, considering that Falmouth has been noted for its Liberality, and during the recent Parliament was represented by two Liberal members—Messrs. D. J. Jenkins and H. T. Cole. Not all Sir Julius's blandishments, and the substantial advantages he offered relative to making Falmouth the last port of departure for emigrant ships, served to sufficiently recommend him and hence we infer that the contest was decided upon its political merits, the constituency declined to swallow the pill—so deftly gilded—presented by Sir Julius. If he had run on any other ticket than Conservatism he would have been false to his instincts and traditions, and it therefore surprised us the other day that we saw mention made of the probability of hi 3 advocating Home Rule for Ireland. We shall wait with some impatience for details of the election—was he thoroughly distanced, or only beaten at the post ? «f ■
