KARORI-MAKARA HIGHWAY BOARD.

The ordinary meeting of this Board was held on Saturday evening. Present —Mr. Graham (Chairman), Messrs. Cook, McLeary, Hendry, and Monagban. A deputation attended from the Island Bay district.

The Board intimated that they were unable to make any permanent arrangements in the matter referred to until estimates were prepared, but they authorised an expenditure of £lO and the use of 18-inch drain pipes for a culvert until next meeting. A deputation attended from Kilbirnie, asking assistance towards roads in that locality, particularly two culverts in the main roads. It was agreed that £3O be voted towards this object. The sum of £2O was voted towards repairs of the road leading past Mr. Crawford's property. Also, £lO towards the South Karori T©ad, to include two pipe culverts. J. Shotter was. appointed roadman for the Makara hill, to work three days a week at ss. per day ; also to act as ranger. The expenditure of £3O was authorised on the North Makara road, under the supervision of Mr. Cook.

Owing to the fact of the Hutt County Council having already made the appointment of Registrar of Dogs for the district, it was decided to appoint Mr. Peter Trotter collector of rates, subject to his accepting the same. In the event of his declining, the whole of the tenders to be cancelled, and fresh tenders ■called for.

It was decided to have a line of road surveyed from the Opau, with a view to estimates being obtained as to cost of construction of same. Mr. Fitzherbert, the County Engineer, to be asked to do the same through the County ■Council.

Mr. McLeavy was authorised to have the gorse cleared on the road through Mr. Williams' property in the South Makararoad, and that summary proceedings be taken -for recovery of cost of same in terms of the Public Works Act. It was decided that the amount of rates received from the Patent Slip Company be expended on that portion of the road. The present contractor for breaking metal was authorised to extend the same so as to «lear an obstruction in the road.

Sundry accounts were passed for payment.
