THE DUCK GREEK BRIDGE.
TO Tin: EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND MAIL, gut,—l understand that only one tender was sent in for the erection of the Duck Greek Bridge at Porirua, which was considered by the Council to he excessive. It is rumored that it is the intention of the Council to abandon the idea of forming the road and constructing the bridge where the old causeway crossed the mouth of the river, aud build a new one where the present old one stands, t his is considered by the settlers ro be a great mistake, and if it is done will be a great disappointment for them, as for some years past they have looked forward to having the road made across the mouth of the river to save the long jouruey round the deep bead. Under any circumstances a new bridge must soon be built at one place or the other, as the old one is worn out and unsafe for traffic. Therefore, it would be better to go to the extra expense at once, and erect it in the proper place. Another good reason for forming the road across the mouth of the river is that it will d& away with a very dangerous fording-place, as scarcely a week passes without somestranger to the place getting into the deep hole of water, in which they get a thorough ducking, and occasionally some have narrowly escaped with their lives. Only on Saturday night last the writer of this was up to his waist in the water for half-an-hour assisting an unfortunate traveller to get his horse and cart out of it, and this is not the first time that he has had to render similar assistance at the same place. It is to be hoped that the Council will again invite tenders, and that contractors for that sort of work will see their way elear to put in for it at a fair paying price, which may be accepted. It may not be generally known that an abundance of good hard stoue suitable for building the breastwork can bo obtained within two minutes’ walk of the intended works, and no doubt an arrangement could be made with the owner of the land for permission to take it.—l am, &c., April 21,1879.
