Commercial News.

The Custom’s duties received at this port for the four weeks ending February 13, were as follows

The import trade has been moderately active during the past week, with the usual complaint of low quotations, which so long as goods are poured in by every London ship must become chronic. We cannot hear of any variation from our month’s report, prices being as a rule weaker in every instance, and greatly in favor of the buyer. At auction 7 tons galvanised iron 24 gauge, in lengths from oft to 10ft only realised £2° 10s per ton, and for the same quality of 26 guage, £24 10s per ton ; while fencing wire Nos. 6,7, and 8 could command no higher price than £l3 per ton, at which rates the goods were bought in. Holders of goods find it is of no avail to force sales, and must wait patiently until times improve. In colonial produce there is no change in prices from last week’s report. Flour, if any thing, is weaker and lines of Canterbury flour in sacks have been offered at £9 10s per ton and even lower. Holders quote £9 to £9 10s for lines of best brands guaranteed. Maize dull at os 6d; oats in fair supply and easier 4s to 4s 3d per bushel being present rate for fair samples. Keg butter is rising in value with the increased price for fresh, but we hear of no sales beyond retail lots at »>£d per lb ; cheese in fail demand, at Sid per lb;

bacon and hams, 9d to lOd ; potatoes very scarce and wanted at auction to-day at £9 2s Gd per ton waß ob- . tained. The sliaremarket continues dull, with few transactions locally to report. Quotations must be therefore taken as a criterion, only derived from outside reports. We have buyers of National Bank shares, National ' Insurance, Colonial Insurance, Standards, etc., and sellers of New Zealand Shipping Co., Wellington Gas, e]c., but no transactions to any extent come under notice. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company report that there was a good attendance, at their wool sale yesterday, and the late prices paling were fully maintained. The biddings were spirited, and the whole catalogue, except three or four lines, were disposed of. The current rates obtained were - Inferior locks and pieces, 2d to 3d; greasy cross-bred fleece, 6d to 84d; merino, none offered; sheepskins, full wool, sd; lambskins, 9d each; pelts, 3d: hides are unsaleable except at reductions on late rates. George Thomas reports :—Flour (Adelaide), £l4 to £ls, scarce; colonial. £lO to £lO 10s; oats, new, 4s to 4s 3d; bran, Is; wheat scarce, inferior fowls, 3s 9d to 4s; hams, 9d; bacon, Sd; cheese, 8-j-d to 9d; maize, 5s 6d to 5s 9d; pollard, Gs 6d to 7s; potatoes searee, 90s to 100 s; butter dull, 9d. DUNEDIN, Friday. Messrs. Wright, Stephenson, and Co. report as follows; —We held our third sale of wool for this oeason at our stores to-day, which brought together a full attendance of buyers. The competition for well-grown merino wools, light, in grease, was good, and half-bred of similar description was also very fairly competed for, but inferior lots of half-bred and long wool v/ere very difficult to quit, except at reduced figures, which is easily accounted for by the low price these classeG are bringing in the Home market. Washed wools are in rather improved demand. We quote—Greasy, merino wools, good to superior. 9d to 10jd ; ordinary, 74d to S4d ; half-bred, light in condition, 81d to lOd ; medium" 74d to 8d ; coarse and inferior, 6)d to 7d; washed wool, 12d to 14d. We catalogued 555 bale 3 and 26 bags, and sold at auction and privately since our last 64S bales and 107 bags. NAPIER, Saturday. Messrs. Hoadley and Lyon report, at their sale at Hawke’s Bay. at the Annual Ram Fair, held on the 6th instant, that they sold pure b;ed Lincoln rams (bred by Mr, Thomas Sutton, oi Fair View, Riverton, Southland), at the following prices 19 at 9 guineas each, 4 at 10 guineas each, 2 at 11 guineas each, sat 12 guineas each, 2at 149 s each, 7at 15 guineas, 3 a' 1C guineas each, 2 at 209 s each, 3 at 259 s each, 3 at 279 s each, lat 30 guineas, 2 t 409 s each, lat 50 guineas, and lat 574 guineas. These rams, coming from Mr. Sutton’s stud flock, which took the Ist, 2nd, and champion prizes all over New Zealand in 1878, were in great demand, and the bidding exceedingly animated. Pure bred merino rams, from S'r Samuel Wilson’s flock, in Victoria, were sold by Messrs. Hoadley and Lyon from 14 to 19 guineas each

J. M. TAYLOR’S SHARE REPORT, Wellington, February 14, 187£

There is no change in quotations for shares, and owing to money being scarce and dear there are no buyers, no matter how low in price.
