The following railways working account is published in the Gazette, showing the total receipts and expenditure for the month ending 14th December, 1878 :

From the above table it will be seen that setting the G-reymouth line on one side as an exceptional line, Napier heads the list for the month so far as profit is concerned, Wellington being close at her heels, and Wanganui and the Christchurch and Dunedin line being close up. Excluding the Greymouth line from consideration, the earnings per mile of railway are greatest on the last-named line, being on an average £BO7 per mile, Wellington next with £717, and Auckland {longo intervaUo) third with £478, Westpoit being lowest with only £134 per mile. The following is an abstract of the railway returns published of the lines within this provincial district :
