He has recovered and brought to Wellington an anchor, fifty fathoms of chain and fifty tons of coal, and lie hopes to get another one hundred and fifty tons The original purchasers are rathei sorry they did not Buck to tnew bargain.

Steam was got up on Monday afternoon on board the new steamer Patea to test the new boiler and engine. The boiler proved lo be alt that could be desired; and the machinery worked with the utmost smoothness, and without the slightest hitch whatever. Several gentlemen witnessed the event, and were well pleased with the result, sta'ing that the work reflected great credit upon .Mr. Mills’estab ishmeut. It was generally thought in town that last Tuesday's gale would have considerably damaged the Hyderabad, or at any rate have washed her much further up the b-’ach. We are glad to learn, however, from 1 aptain Gibbons, who returned from Otaki yesterday, that the ship is still in the same position as before the galeNothing has been damaged. Captains Gibbons and Ho'mvvood return to the wreck to-day, and are just as sanguine as ever about the successful launching of the vessel.

The Manawatu Herald has the following regarding the race up river between the Manawatu and Huia : - “The Manawatu, Huia, and Go-Ahead all came up the river together last night, having left Wellington a out t e same hour on the previous evening. The two former vessels crossed the bar together, an 1 a most exciting race took place up the liver. The Manawatu was rather heavily la icn, having a considerable portion of deck cargo, while the Huia, on the other hand, was rather light. Arriving opposite the Putiki cattle wharf the new boat spurted, and bide her companion good-bye, but the old favorite declined to be so summarily shook off, and more than held her own, succeeding in getting first berth at the Corporation wharf. Through the Argas we hear of a slight mishap which occurred to the excursion steamer Albatross while returning from Frankston the other evening. The Albatross was proceeding up the Yarra for the purpose of landing h v passengers at the Queen’s Wharf, and when just be ow the Yarraville sugarworks she came into eol ision with the s.s. Arawata. from New Zealand, which had run ashore on a mud bank. There appeared to have been ample room for the Albatross to pass the Arawata, and al hough signals were made on board the Arawata to warn the approaching steamer of the danger, the Albatross stood on her course, and the result was that her paddle-box struck the stern of the Arawata. The puidle-box of the Albatross was very considerably injured by the force of the collision, but the wheel escaped with but slight damage, and after a little delay the Albatross continued her journey, and landed her passengers at the wharf at about half-past 8 o’clock. There was a good deal of confusion on board both steamers at the.time of the collision, but as so n as the exact nature of the accident became known the alarm quickly subsided. The damage occasioned to the stern of the Araw ta was comparatively slight. but the paddle-box of the Albatross was almost carried away, and the steamer had to be laid up the following morning for repairs. WRECK OF THE FOREST QUEEN. We have to obroniole the wreck of another of our coasters. The Forest Queen, ketch. Captain Matchlin. 51 tons, and owned by Messrs Mclntyre and Co., of this city, was driven ashore close to the Hyderabad on Tuesday morning. It will be remembered that the Forest Queen has lately been attending to the ship Hyderabad, and hail brought several cargoes round here, being towed by the Gienelg. A terrific gale sprang up very suddenly abuut 1 o’clock on Tuesday morning, and increased in violence about daylight, when it blew a perfect hurricane. The ketch quickly drove on shore, the spot being about a mile to southward of where the Hyderabad now lies. The following is the insurance on the Forest Queen :—N w Zealand Insuranoe Co.. £SOO, £250 of which is re-insured in the Colonial office; and £250 in the Standard. ARRIVAL OF H.M.S. NYMPHE. K. M.B. Nymphe, nine guns, under the command of Captain Townsend, arrived here shortly after midday on Thursday from Sydney. She will only remain here for a few clays, to coal and take on board provisions, when she will commence her voyage for England. She left Sydney on the 7th instant, and has made rather a protacted passage owing to very heavy and adverse weather. When she left Sydney the weather was fine and the wind light. For the first four days varmb e winds and fine weather Wire experienced. <>n arrival off the coast of New Zealand very heavy wea’her was encountered, particularly on Wednesday last, when the wind blew with hurricane force, raising a tremendous sea. During the height of the gale the second captain of the main-top, named Bowse, who was giving a hand in reefing the maintopsail, missed his hold :«nd fell into the sea. Everything that possibly could be done was resorted to in the hope of recovering the p »or fellow, hut there was too much sea running, and ti>e unfortunate man was never seen again. The Nymphe then proceeded on her voyage, arriving here as above. WRECK OF THE BRIGANTINE LTZZIE GUY. WESTPORT. Tuesday. A brigantine, name unknown, is reported ashore to the north of Cape Foulwind. Later. The brigantine ashore is the Lixzie Guy. No further particulars are obtainable. Only one man is visible on deck, and the rest are supposed tob ; battened below. No communication his yet been held wi h the vessel, as the sea is fearful and breaking over her. The beach is composed of soft sand. The Ocean Bird sailed in yesterday. It blew a furious weiterly gale lost night, which continued with heavy rain this morning. 2.30 p.m. The Lixzle Guy has on board 10 tons of cargo. She was bound from- Lyttelton to Hokitika, and is owned by Craig and Haworth, of the latter place. A squall hove the vessel on her beam-ends, and shifted her ballast. She is insured, but the offices are unknown. All hands are safe, and the vessel is likely to be got off. ENGLISH SaiPPI G.
