Their estimated liabilities are £27,000. A Queensland telegram reports that a first case of lynch law had occurred at Hodgkinson rush, a miner being flogged and his property confiscated for horse-stealing. The police are waiting at Brisbane to arrest some diggers who refused to leave the steamer at Townsville. Sydney, Saturday. Commercial. —Hennessy’s brandy, case, 30s. to 365.; quarters, 7s. 3d, very firm. Kerosene easier at Is. 6d. in bond. Rice is unaltered. New Zealand wheat is at 55.; oats, 2s. 6d. to 2s. 9d. Arrivals from New Zealand to-day are likely to affect the market. Sydney, Monday. Six youths were sailing in the harbor on Sunday, when their boat capsized. One was drowned. It is supposed he was seized by a Sydney, Tuesday. Breadstuffs easier in consequence of large arrivals. _ TT . , Sydney, Wednesday. The Torres Strait mails arrived yesterday. Shoobert, an old colonist, is dead. Sailed—Hero, for Auckland. Melbourne, Friday. Public feeling is much excited by the arbitrary and high-handed manner of the Customs authorities towards the Stevensons. The Government are expected to take the mattei into serious consideration. Melbourne, Monday. The statistics show a large increase in the yield of wheat last year. Two attempts to throw the trains off the Government lines are reported. Arrived—Arawata, from the Bluff ; steamer Northumberland. Sailed —Otago. Melbourne, Tuesday. Stevenson’s letters by the Northumberland were seized by the Customs, but given up unopened. An indictment for assault against the firm and employes was filed. The Northumberland brings dates to 24th March. There have been heavy falls of snow. Bosnia and Herzegovina impede the operations of insurgents. It is expected that the insurrection will break out again with renewed violence, as a considerable number of volunteers with supplies are arriving from Servia. Servia counts upon having 300,000 men at her disposal in case of war with Turkey. __ _ The Emperor of Germany intends visiting Queen Victoria at Baden. Heavy storms are reported throughout the United States. Many shipwrecks occurred on the Atlantic coast. It is stated that the Government troops suffered a serious defeat from a body of Mexican insurgents in the State of Oaxaca. Sailed —Alhambra. Brisbane, Saturday. Eighty-six diggers from Coektown have been imprisoned for fourteen days for illegally obtaining passages. Many look as if they suffered severe hardships on the Palmei diggings. Nearly 500 diggers have returned from the rush to Townsville.
