The Marquis of Hartington will move that, while Parliament is willing to consider what additional title should be given to the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, it is inexpedient to impair the ancient royal dignity of the British Sovereign by styling Queen Victoria Empress of any portion of the British dominions. The French Ministerial programme is peace, free trade, and a desire that the nation shall give an honest support to the Republic. ° March 18. The Marquis of Hartington’s motion was ne !ffie V p d roposal to increase the postage on newspapers via San Francisco is postponed till 1879.

The steamer Durham has arrived in Melbourne in 50 days; all well. Palmer river advices report the discovery of new goldfields, sixty miles from Cooktown, richer than anything yet discovered. Sydney, March 18. The ova aboard the Durham are in good condition. There are fearful accounts from, the Queensland back country of want of water and feed. Fifty thousand cattle are now on the frontage of the river at Warego, which is dried up. The thermometer stands daily at 112 in the Markets.—Rice, nominal ; kerosene, 2s. Id. to 2s. 2d.; oats, 2s. lOd. to 2s. lid.; brandy, Hennessy’s, quarters, 6s. 6d.; case, 295. 9d. to 30s. Sydney, March 20. The Durham ova leave for New Zealand by first steamer. Sydney, March 21. At an examination of the ova by the Durham half were found to be sound. Sydney, March 22. No. 1 sugar has sold at £36. Alfred Anderson, pianist, de Murska’s husband, died in Melbourne to-day. The Torres Strait mail has arrived at Queensland. Sydney, March 23. Further accounts from the new goldfields in Queensland are satisfactory. Gold is traceable for miles. Melbourne, March 23. The Customs authorities are investigating charges against L. Stevenson . and . Co., of defrauding the Customs by duplicate invoices. Arrived: The Arawata.
