Commercial News.

The amount of Customs duties received at this port for the xveek ending September 9, 1875 xvas as under ;

Everything has been excessively quiet in the import trade during the past week, and with the exception of tl.e large increase in stocks caused by the almost simultaneous arrival of the Toviotdalo and Dilawur from London, there is little or no change to report. Ba,les by auction keep doxvn prices, as many goods are forced into sale that are not just now in demand, and consequently, do not realise their real value In the ordinary course of trade there is no alteration from recent quotations. CHRISTCHURCH. (From the Lyttelton Times,') Grain and Produce. —Transactions in grain during the xx-eek have been almost nil, and from appearances there is no prospect of improvement. Eatest English telegrams indicate a decline in wheat, as the fine xveather had set in. There have been no transactions in our market during the xveek, and millers and exporters are not offering over 3s. lOd. to •Is., the latter for line hard xvheats. There is no demand for oats xvhatever in this market. All outside markets are fully supplied, and xvo quote 2s. (id. as the very highest price for good milling samples. Feed, 2s. 3d. to 2s. 4d. In barley there is no change—demand nominal. For flour there is no demandbusiness is confined to toxvn trade. Stocks in outside market arc considered sufficient for requirements for the next four months. For potatoes, the lateness of. the season has caused several orders to he cancelled—-x\-o quote £3 15s. as market value at Christchurch station. In dairy produce there have been no transactions—demand nominal. Stock and Stations. — AYc are noxv fairly into the second month of spring, and so far the xveather has been everything that could ho desired. The fields begin to present a tinge of verdure, but there has not been enough rain to start the grass to any extent. Fat stock of all kinds continues abundant, and it is noxv evident there xvill he no scarcity tins season. Cattle xvill not reach the price xvhicli everyone expected, owing to various causes, one being the low price of beef at the West Coast, xvhicli puts anything like keen competition between dealers and butchers out of the question. On AYodncsday the yards xvere crowded xvitli sheep, including a large number of merino "’ethers. Prices did not disclose much change in the market, and certainly there xvas no advance over last xxceks quotations. A fexv pens of really good merino xvntlior.s made 155., and the highest price for crossbreds xx-as 18s. AYe leave our quotation to stand at •»,d. per lb. on the «iver*i#e. Store sheep are in demand, especially hoggets, which range in value from 10s. to 145., according to quality. Only a limited number of cattle was yarded, and prices for fat stock showed no improvement. Top price stands ati J.is. per lOOlbs., medium and inferior quality somewhat less. Store cattle bring high rates, especially cattle likely to come on fat within the next twelve months.
