EDUCATION BOARD.

An adjourned meeting of tie Board of Education was held on Monday morning. Present Messrs Brandon (chairman), Waterhouse, Toomath, and Graham. Although a considerable amount of business was transacted, it was chiefly in the nature of details of slight public interest. A letter was read from Mr Jas. J. Anderson resigning the collectorship of the Wanganui town and Wanganui-Waito-tara districts, in which it was agreed that the same be accepted on Mr Watt recommending a successor ; but that Mr Anderson would have to appear in the event of there being any case from these districts being brought before the Court in Wellington. The nominations for local committees were confirmed. In regard to an application from the master and mistress of the Carterton school for an increase of salaries, the secretary was instructed to write to them to the effect that the request would be granted on their passing an examination of the Board. The secretary was instructed to write to the Provincial Secretary that, relying upon his authority, the Board would no longer hesitate to bring the whole educational system of the province to a state of efficiency. In view of Mr Toomath again visiting the Wairarapa district, he was instructed to have certain necessary repairs and alterations made to the Taita and Greytown schools. The secretary was instructed to write to ask the Superintendent to sign the trust deed of the Greytown school property, and to obtain the signatures of his cotrustees. The secretary was instructed to ascertain from Mr Thynne, of Foxton, what was the highest rent likely to be obtained for a lease of the reserves at that place for not more than 21 years. A bonus of £lO was granted to Mr Singer, of the Horokiwi school, to defray the cost of a horse and saddle. Owing to paragraph based on erroneous information which had appeared in the Wanganui “ Evening Herald,” the secretary was instructed to write a circular letter to all schoolmasters under the Board warning them against writing, directing, or instigating articles in the papers in a spirit hostile to the Board. It was decided that immediate steps should be taken towards the filling of the position of schoolmaster for Tauherinekau school. In regard to the Upper Hutt Sunday school, the Board decided that the wishes of the master should be respected.
