A West Coast contemporary states that the Canterbury authorities have applied to the Commissioner of Police in Westland to obtain three men suitable for appointment as constables. The Port Darwin goldfields (the " Bruce Herald" states) continue to exercise a powerful influence over the minds of the miners of Otago. Many have already winged their flight for the distant field, and very few Melbourne steamers leave Dunedin without taking one or two adventurous spirits bound for the tropical Dorado. The Coromandel quartz reefs, unlike those ef the Thames, have not jumped into notoriety in a day or two ; but they appear nevertheless to be steadily growing into public favor. Taking the return for the month of June last past, it will be seen that the quartz averages nearly two ounces of gold to the ton. This, if not in any way remarkable, is very payable. The total return gives, for 595 tons, a yield of 1072 ozs in round numbers. The quartz was from six claims.
