Melbourne. —The “ Argus,” of the 24th ult, reports : —ln breadstuffs, flour is steadily maintained ; holders ask £l4 10s for parcels, but we hear of two lines of 50 tons each having changed hands at £l4 7s 6d. Bakers’ lots continue to be moved off at £ls. Wheal is very firm ; there are no sellers under 6s 9d to 6s lOd for prime Victorian, and there are few parcels to be met with ; but we understand th«t in one instance 6s 9d was offered, and refused, for a good line. Oats are steady, and sales could readily be made at our quotations of 5s to 5s 3d for common to good , feed, but holders as a rule show little desire to quit stock at such prices. Maize is. wanted, and full rates are obtained for any disposed of. We hear of some 800 bags having been taken up at 5s 3d. Sugars have not been much dealt in but pending the sale of the several parcels to be offered to-morrow forenoon, that is not more than might have been expected. The shipment of 3600 bags China Refining Company’s, to be sold, is a very superior sample of yollow and very light yellow counters. About 6000 bags Mauritius, various descriptions, forming balances of several shipments, will likewise be submitted to competition. Kerosene oil is wanted, but holders do not care to sell at the price buyers are willing to give. A parcel of 500 cases Devoe’s has, however, been quitted at Is Bd. Some 2000 cases of Devoe’s will be sold publicly to-mor-row. In rice there is little to refer to in the way of sales, but a good deal of interest is centred in the result of the auction sale tomorrow, when half the E. J. Spence’s cargo will be placed on the market. In liquids, we note the quittance of a parcel of Byass’s stout at 11s 6d.
