LATEST SPECIAL TELEGRAMS.

By the arrival of the Tararua we have more complete and later telegrams of the news received by the Suez mail steamer. The following is the latest special telegram to the “ Argus London, September 4. The Queen’s health is causing great anxiety. Mr Gladstone, at Whitby, in replying to the working men’s address, vindicated the late Ministerial policy. There is fine harvest weather, but the wheat crop is deficient. Money is abundant. The rate of discount is unaltered.

Walter Montgomery, the actor, has committed suicide. The Brindisi and the Nevada’s mails were delivered together, and the August telegrams from Australia are now coming through. A fresh seizure of Fenian arms has been lately made at Liverpool. Corporal punishment is abolished in the navy. FRANCE. After repeated delays the Communist trials commenced on the 7tli ult. The prisoners number 3C,000, including 2,000 women and 2,000 lads. Four courta-martial are sitting. Seventeen of the leaders were arraigned on the first day. The prisoners appear in good spirits, and generally show levity when the indictment is read charging them with conspiracy to overthrow the Government, incitement to civil war, besides special acts of pillage, massacre, and outrages. Some documents ordering incendiarism are pronounced forgeries by the counsel for the accused. The bearing of Assi is most insolent. Rossel and Rochefort were to be tried before a separate court a fortnight later. Larogues, ex-mayor of Puteaux, has been sentenced to penal servitude for life. Several of the guiltiest of the Communist leaders are in London. M. Gambetta is suspected of the intention of seizing power at the first opportunity. The soldiers raised by him during his rule as Dictator are very discontented. Numerous Communists have been returned at tho Paris elections for the municipality, owing to the apathy of the trading classes. The Algerian insurrection is assuming alarming dimensions. The Arabs threaten to exterminate the French settlers.

Dr. Dollinger was elected Rector of Munich University by

54 votes to six. Several German Governments refuse to give their official sanction to the promulgation of the dogma of Infallibility. The Pope declares that he does not claim the right to depose sovereigns or release nations from their allegiance. A schism is regarded as imminent. The Pope taunts his ultramontane advisers with the result of their policy. The MontCenis tunnel will be opened next month. Subscriptions are invited towards a throne of gold for the Pope. GERMANY. Discontent is spreading in Germany, amongst the working classes. A masons’ strike and serious riots have occurred at Berlin. INDIA AND THE EAST. Galle, Sept. 5. The Suez steamer Deccan is two days late, owing to the breakage of her engines after leaving Aden. The Avoca met with rough weather on the run up. One sailor, after wounding another, jumped overboaad and was lost. Mr Shafto Robertson, the actor, fell backwards through the engine room skylight on the top of the cylinder, and was picked up insensible. He died after lingering one week, and was buried at sea. The weekly mail to Galle is in full operation. The new Messageries Maritimes steamers are magnificent. Calcutta, August 26. Further news is received about Dr Livingstone, and supplies of provisions have been sent. Severe illness is reported amongst the crews of men-of-war in the Persian Gulf. The ravages of cholera and famine in Persia are mitigated. CHINA. A typhoon in Formosa Channel resulted in many wrecks and much loss of life. A special message received at Galle, from Hong Kong, on 3rd September, stales:—“ A typhoon occurred here yesterday, causing considerable damage to shipping.”
