Earp, and myself is to be published to-morrow, the following remarks are necessary to explain the origin of the correspondence. Capt. Clendon requested me to call on Mr. Moore, the printer and publisher of the Auckland Gazette, with a letter demanding the name or the author of an article which appeared in the paper of 16th instant, headed “ Our Independent Members.” Mr. Moore gave me the name of George Butler Earp, M. C., and, furthermore, placed in my hand the manuscript of said article, which he received from and is in the hand writing of the saicf Earp. I received the manuscript on the condition that I should not part with it to Mr. Moore’s detriment. The public will recollect, that the publication animadverts in strong terms, and endeavours to blast the reputation of Captain Clendon, impiously calling in the aid of Scripture to his nefarious attempt, while it most disgustingly lauds himself, at the expense of truth, honour and gratitude.
