Auckland, 22nd Feb 1842. . Mr. Editor, Sir, —I trust lam not intruding upon your columns, in bringing before the notice of the Public generally, scenes, which, however disgusting are constantly obtruding on the notice of that portion of Her Majesty's subjects, who are so unfortunate as to live in the neighbourhood of the Gaol. Being a resident of Queen-street, 1 am frequently compelled to see drunken persons carried off to the Lock-up ; but sir, is it right because there happen to be those in our community, who occasionally imbibe too freely, that the feelings of the respectable portion of the community are to be outraged by seeing a host of Maoris, who, upon these occasions are invariably called by the Constables to their assistance, exercising not -in the most humane manner, the brief authority given by the constables, for taking the poor unfortunates to the Goal; For this service, lam given to understand the Maoris receive a fee. 1 ask would it not be better, that the Constabulary force, if not at present efficient should be increased than a set of savages should be allowed as they now are to drag and haul to Gaol, those, who have committed no more serious offence against the Laws ? I have the honor to be, Sir, Your most obeaient Servant, SCRUTATOR,
Rkgatta.—We are pleased to learn that arrangements have been made for a spendid Regatta on the 17th March next. Particulars on Saturday.
