law.—At the close of the civil term, Mr. Justice Willis delivered the following address:—" 1 cannot close this term —a teim which has taken place at perhaps the most important crisis in the annals of the history of this Province, without expressing my entire satisfaction at the spirit of moderation and mutual forbearance, which has characterized the members of this community. That there has been of late great pecuniary distress throughout the Australian colonies,
cannot be doubted ; and when we consider the number ol ships and their tonnage which resort to our noble port —the amount of our imports and exports, and the extent of which may be termed our home trade, such distress must, I fear, in some degree have affected the mercantile interests in this colony, in which almost all of the inhabitants are more or less involved. What then under such circumstances has been the business of this Term 1 I answer from the returns before me, only 39 undefended, 37 defended, and two Jury cases. All or- most of these cases were of trifling amount, and many of them when called on, were agreed to be amicably settled out of Court. Such kindly feeling not only reflects the highest lustre on the parties themselves, but will I am persuaded disperse by its geuial influence any passing clouds which may for a moment obscure the meridian brightness of that sun of prosperity, which I think will ever shine in Australia Felix.—Port Phillip Gazette. Emigration.—Our readers may form a true estimate of the present state of the labour market in South Australia, by perusing the subjoined opinion of Governor Gray, relative thereto, which appears in a late number of the South Australian Register: —Governor Gray says —"My excuse can only be in the fact, that at the present moment upwards of 1,900 persons would be in a state of absolute destitution and starvation, were it not for the assistance afforded them by Government. lam ready to admit, that many of these individuals have been 'induced to leave their homes by having expectations held out to them which have not been realised. AU though I am not answerable for this state of things, the present situation of the mechanics and laborers of this province has, ever since my arrival in the colony, engaged my most earnest attention, and has elicited the deepest sympathy from me. I have done every thing which my public capacity—and I have contributed largely from my privete resesources towards ihe advancement of this object."— Port Phillip Herald.
