Legislative Council. —lt is with great reluctance we are compelled to withhold from the public a full report of the proceedings of the Council, yesterday ; it is in consequence of a press of other matter. Alarming Fire. —An alarming fire broke out in Mechanic’s Bay, on Wednesday last, at the Government Sawpits, which it is supposed to have originated by the ignition of some loose shavings, through the carelessness of one of the workmen, in the employment of the Government, throwing the fire from his pipe after smoking. Some persons walking from Government House towards Mechanic’s Bay, discovered from the hills, at its western entrance, a dense volume of smoke arising from the sawpits (which were very extensive, and covered in with weather boardsi, and before they could reach the spot, the wind being high, the whole was a mass of flames. The flames extended rapidly to an adjoining store which contained property to a large amount, including four barrels /of gunpowder, besides several loaded muskets, Providentially the guupowder was extracted before ignition took place, but the muskets exploded without however doing any injury, A second building, of rapoo, belonging to a mechanic, and a large quantity of sawed stuff also fell a prey to the flames Although every exertion was used, all that fell in the way of the fire was consumed, A great amount of property was destroyed, and privale individuals were considerable sufferers as well as the Government,.

The Loss op the Paul Pry ”~Ths vesse was swamped in a heavy squall o.ff Cape Shank and almost immediately sank. There wer. thirteen on board, one of whom unfortunately perched. We are not in possession of full particulars. The vessel, we understand, wpr%n/.ur«d for £},ooo The Boctciii r Swindle,.—— We have received, a letter from Captain Waiker in reference to the reterition here of the letter cancelling .Charles Bouchers, authority to draw upon his brother. It appears that tha, letter remained for some time in Captain Walkers possession unopened in the expectation of he arrival of Boucher in Adelaide and it was only subsequently opened in the hope that it might contain authority to pay, or the means of providing for the payment of the bubble drafts on Adelaide which were then making their appearance. Under these circumstances'"'it doe; not seem hat any blame is attachable to Captai. Walker. We observe that Milne, Boucher s agent is an applicant for the benefit of the In solvent Act. A turjaus expose may be looked for when that worthy comes up for examination. <?., A y Register.
