DOMESTIC INTELLIGENCE.

Publican’s Act. —We promised to quote from the Publicans’ Act, 2d. Vic. No. 18 of 1838. We now do so. “ Publicans to have their names legibly painted in letters at least three inches, with the words Licensed to Retail Fermented and Spiritous Liquors (or if only holding a Wine and Beer License) the words Licensed to Retail Wine Beer and Fermented Liquors constantly and permanently remaining and plainly to be seen and read, on a conspicuous part of the House. A lamp, with two burners to be kept constantly lighted and burning over the door from sun-set to sun-rise .” By Sec. 3, Vic. 1, No. 13 of 1839, when lamps are extinguished by accident or boisterous weather discretionary power is given to the Justice before whom the complaint shall be heard ; it is obligatory in such cases to convict. Onus of proof of the manner in in whioh the lamp was extinguished, is, thrown on the party complained against. Penalty—not less than one, nor more than five pounds. Yacht “ Albatross.” —On Wednesday, His Excellency the Governor, accompanied by David Rough, Esq., Harbour Master, sailed in the Albatross, J. C. Blackett, Esq’s, yacht, on an excursion to CoromandelHarbour. We learn that His Excellency’s absence will not exceed three- or four days.

New Zealand Company’s Second Settlement.—Erratum.—The Lands to which a purchaser will, for £3OO, be entitled to, are 150 acres of country land 50 Suburban acres, and an allotment in the Town, of Nelson of One Acre. In our last Number the quantity of country land was erroneously stated to be 100 acres. We are requested to inform the public, that the Amusements advertised to take place at Watson’s Hotel this evening, will be held in a detached building in Chancery-street formerly used by Mr. Watson as a workshop. The Betting Rooms will be open at Watson's Hotel, on this and every day previous to the Races, and that all bets made will be registered in the books kept by Mr. Watson for that purpose. The present state of the odds are—2 to l against Dr. Gammie’s mare Haidee—s to 1 against Lieut. Best’s Miss Starch, for the Town Plate. Vessels for Auckland. —By our Sydney files of newspapers, we perceive there are about 1,200 tons of shipping laid on for this Port. The following are the names of the vessel Julia, Dunning; Nimrod, Cox ; Margaret, M’Kennon; Queen Victoria, Clarke ; Shamrock , Daldy ; and Eleanor, Hoderness : three of the above vessels are placed upon the berth as regular traders. Merchandize and cattle to a large amount may be expected by these vessels { as well as passengers of the mechanic class. State of the Streets. —The culprits sentenced to hard labour are, it appears, to work upon the streets, and a party of them is now so employed. ’Tis to be hoped it may be soon a less tedious and difficult process to move along Shortland-Crescent: that part between Messrs. Brown and Campbell’s and Mr. Joseph’s premises, and across towards Messrs. Williamson and. Crummer’s, is in a shocking state, and at night it is all but impossible to traverse it, and escape immersion in some drain or filthy sink. In wet weather it is a disgraceful spectacle, and as that place is a cross to Fort-street and the water-side generally, and also to High-street, it happens that the worst spot in town is that which is the greatest thoroughfare. The Crescent, a little above Watson’s Hotel and Mr. Whitaker’s office, is so steep, and af.er rain becomes so slippery it is often almost impassable. The impracticable state of Shortland crescent and Queen-street in wet weather is an intolerable nuisance. We hate all exaggeration and unreasonable complaints, and have hitherto said but little on this subject, though we have been constantly urged to take it up. Osborne’s Theatrical Entertainments. — We have been informed by parties present at the entertainments given by Mr. Osborne, on Saturday last, that they gave general satisfaction, and we understand that he intends repeating them this evening in a building at the rear of Watson’s Hotel.
