REPORT DISCOUNTED STATEMENT IN AUSTRALIA SYDNEY, Dec. 27 -The prospects of an early end to rationing in Australia are not bright, aceoiding to Senator Keane, Minister of Customs, commenting on a Sydney newspaper rej)ort tliat rationing would l)e abolished early next year. Senator Keane said thai all iood items at present rationed would continue to be rationed until conditions justified the lifting of restrictions. The matter had not been discussed by the Government.

Leading officials of the Rationing Commission in Sydney denied that the Federal Government intended to end food rationing early next year. "We have received no advice from the Government <>f any change," said one officer, "lint, on the. contrary have received instructions showing we are to carry on as usual.'',

POWER AMNESTY ENDS N.S.W. PUBLIC'S DUTIES AID IN RESUMING INDUSTRY SYDNEY. Dec. 27 A griHTiil resumption of industry on •January 7, as planned by the New South Wales Government, will not he possible unless the public faithfully observes the restrictions on the use of gas and electricity in their homes. These restrictions—the most drastic over imposed in New South Wales—were suspended at 7 p.m. on Monday, Imt came into force again at midnight last night. The power authorities fear that tho people may not observe the restrictions after the Christmas amnesty. Coalmines will resume work after their Christmas holidays on January 7 and the State Government had planned for a general resumption of industry on that day; but unless tho restrictions nro observed, power will not be available for industry on the date planned.

LEVANT WITHDRAWALS ADJOURNMENT OF TALKS PARIS, Dec. 20 The British-French talks in Beirut on tho withdrawal of troops from the Levant, have been adjourned. French officials admit that a local difficulty has arisen, but they strenuously repudiate French newspapers' suggestions that there is tension between the authorities in London and Paris.
