MAJOR VAN ZYL APPOINTED (Rrrd. 0.30 p.m.) PRETORIA, O 28 The King, on the recommendation of the Government of South Africa, has appointed Major the Hon. Gideon Brand van Zyl Governor-General of the Union.

Major van Zyl succeeds Sir Patrick Duncan, who died in 1943, and is the first South African-born GovernorGeneral. Major van Zyl is 72 years of age and has lived most of his life in the Capetown suburb of Seapoint, which he represented in Parliament for more than 20 years, as a supporter of FieldMarshal Smuts, until he was appointed Administrator of Cape Province.

Oct. 29 A new "All-Red" route, to save spending dollars on Panama Canal fees in repatriating Britons from the K;lr East, is being developed via Canada, says the Daily Mail. The Canadian railway systems are ready to operate four extra trains daily, each carrying 500 men, between Vancouver and Nova Scotia. The chief difficulty is to provide shipping for the eection between Manila and Vancouver.
