LAWRENCE DEFEATED FLIGHT WINS COX PLATE VALLEY CUP TO VALCURL j (Reed. 6.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 28: In spite of his ignominious defeat in the W. S. Cox Plate at Moonee Valley yesterday Lawrence remains favourite for the Melbourne Cup. Sydney's champion mare, Flight, ran one of the greatest races of her career to lead nearly all the way in the Cox Plate, fighting off challenge after challenge to win narrowly from the Victoria Derby favourite, Don Pedro. Lawrence, odds-on favourite, finished fourth. The Moonee Valley Cup was won by an outsider, Valcnrl, in a tight, finish from the prominent Melbourne Cup candidate, Leonard. TAKANINI GALLOPS JOY FOOT SPRINTS NICELY The two-year-old filly Joy Foot, who ran second to Regal Praise in the second division of the Welcome Stakes at Ellerslio this month, was responsible for a smart effort at Takaninl on Saturday. LUCKY MEG WINS HALF-SISTER TO FANTOM Lucky Meg, who won the Belmont Handicap at Trcntham on Saturday in 3.10 4-5 off 3.37, is a four-year-old mare by Lucky Jack from Fantine, dam of the good trotter Fantom. Valuta, n full-sister to Fantom. was a competitor in both the. Xai Nai Handicap and the Taita Handicap at Trentham, but she failed to trot evenly. Fantine is an American-bred mare by Guy Abbey from Olive Fant, by General Watt. 1 Lucky Meg is a promising pacer. She is trained by R. B. Berry, who for some time past has not enjoyed good health. SMART PERFORMANCE DAPHNE GRATTAN RUNS 3.17 Although Daphne Grattan failed to win nt Trentham on Saturday, she ran two good races in the hands of the, Epsom relnsman I R. Morrison. Daphne G rattan finished close to the placed horses in the Sharpe Handicap from the 30 yards mark, and in the Belmont Handicap, off 48 yards, ran third to Lucky Meg and Lord Peterson, registering the smart time of 3.17 off 3.33. She possesses speed and stamina and when she develops more sol id n ess should win good handicaps.
