PRISONERS SUFFER
SHOCKING CONDITIONS BRITISH ORDER TRANSFER (Reed. 7.30 p.m.) BATAVIA, Oct, 20 Nearly 1100 prisoners, mainly Dutch, were held under "Black Hole of Calcutta" conditions at Buitenzorg, 45 miles from Batavia, by the Indonesian Peace Preservation Corps, said a British official spokesman. The prisoners, who were crammed into a space suitable for 100 persons, are Dutch internees who were rounded up by Indonesians on October 11 under the pretext of registering them. The spokesman said that on discovering the plight of the prisoners British staff officers ordered their evacuation to the Gurkha's barracks, beginning with the sick. The Dutch cruiser Tromp is leaving Batavia today with a detachment of Netherlands East Indies civil administration personnel for the tin-bearing island of Billiton, where Nationalist disturbances are reported. The task of the people on board is stated to be the restoration of lawful authority. Seven thousand dock labourers in Singapore are on strike in sympathy with the Indonesian Nationalists in Java.
