AIRMEN RETURN
DBAFT FROM PACIFIC AIR TRANSPORT TO SOUTH A draft of 575 airmen returned to Auckland on Saturday morning: hv +k Union Steam Ship Co.'s steamer Wahine, on her second trip from Bo gainville. ... On arrival the vessel was boarded bv an official party who welcomed the men home. It consisted of Mr F. Hackett M.P., who represented the Government' Mr H. T. Morton, M.P., the Mayor' Mr J. A. C. Allum, who greeted'the men on behalf of the citizens of Auckland, Mr J. H. Frater, chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board, Group Can tain C. C. Hunter, Wing Commander F. E. Dix, Mr A. P. Postlewaite, president of the Returned Services Association, and Mr R. Wilson, secretary of ; the Air Force Association.
After the party had been welcomed the men were dispersed as quickly as •possible. The Auckland men were taken to their homes by Red Cross drivers and the men for the South Island, numbering nearly 300, were taken to Whenuapai from where they were flown to their homes.
This was the first time that aircraft had been used to_ transport men testations near their homes on their return from duty. At frequent interval: Dakota;?, each carrying nearly 30 men 15 took off from Whenuapai for Paraparaumu, Ohakea, Wooubourne, Nelson and Harewood.
