RETURN TO DOMINION USE OF STEAMER WAHINE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Thursday The well-known inter-island steamer Wahine will he withdrawn from the service on arrival at Wellington on September 15 until further notice. The Wahine will be used to bring soldiers anil airmen now stationed in the Pacific back to New Zealand, according to an announcement tonight by the Minister of Defence, Mr Jones. Air transport- also will be used to bring hack Pacific service personnel. A triple-screw pnssenger steamer, the Union Steam Ship Company's 4.436-ton Wahine was built at Dumbarton by W. Denny and Brothers in 11)13 for _the Weilington-Lyt.t-elton run. She_ is 3751't in length, with n beam of 52ft and a depth of 25ft. When a new 65100-ton j ship being built by Vickers. Armstrong. Ltd., is delivered the Wahine will he used as a stand-by and the pre.selit stand-by ship, the 38-year-old Maori, will be scrtipped.
