GAY STAR SPRINTS NICELY A feature of the work at Ellerslie yesterday was a pleasing sprint by Gay Star, who galloped four furlongs in GJJs. She went evenly throughout and ran on attractively at the finish. The No. 3 grass was used and the going was dead. Beau Mai heat Gaelic Salute over tour furlongs in ">;{ i-.">s. Beau Mai had the better of the weights and was fully extended at the finish. Great Pleasure had an advantage over Red L'aint at the end of four furlongs in 52 *1 -i>s. Commissar and Diavil did an easy four furlongs in .">1 I-/is. Both were winners in minor company last season. Duke Royal and Rajalal covered five furlongs in l.}) 2-5. Duke Royal worked on the inside and held a slight advantage in the early stages. Rajalal has plenty of size and is a good mover. British Mint (Ritchie) and Sir Rajah (Kerr) jumped four steeplechase fences on the tlat. TAKANINI TRACK JOVIAL SONG WORKS NICELY AVork at Takanini yesterday was mostly confined to short sprints some to impress being Jovial Song, Bycroft,, Royal Slipper and \\ bile Blaze. The middle grass was used, the going being fairly good. •Tovial Song, who appears to have derived benefit from her race at Ellerslie last Saturday was responsible for a smart four furlongs when she shaded Bycroft in 51 2-ss. Bycroft, who is furnishing nicely, shaped very creditably. Royal Slipper, winner of the two-year-old Pioneer Handicap at the Avnndale meeting last September, drew attention to her early three-year-old prospects by sprinting four furlongs in 51 f!-."s.
