FUTURE CONTROL

SOUTH-WEST PACIFIC NEW ZEALAND TO SHARE CANBERRA, Aug. 23 The South-west Pacific military command will be dissolved as soon as General MacArtfyur takes up his post as Allied Supreme Commander in Japan. It is expected that the United States will withdraw from areas south of the Philippines after the signing of the surrender terms in Tokyo. Control of this area will revert to the British, Australian and New Zealand Governments, which will decide among themselves how military and civil responsibilities will be- allotted. For the present Australia will be responsible for the administration of Borneo and possibly of Timor. Later Britain is expected to control Borneo and Portugal to control Timor. In New Guinea, Papua, the Solomons and Ocean and Naurr Islands Australia will be a principal, administering its own territories or mandates. British Plan For Borneo The British Colonial Secretary, Mr G. H. Hall, announced th. t the Government io considering taking over the direct administration of British North Borneo. Discussions to this end have been going on between the department and the court of directors of. the Chartered Company which has hitherto been in charge of the administration. The announcement that, British and Australian forces will reoccupv all' the islands south of the Philippines indicates that Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten's command has been extended to include Java and the other islands south to Timor, Indo-Ghina and Siam China will undertake responsibility for the military administration of the northern zone of Indo-China, and the South-east Asia Command, a substantially larger southern zone, says the Press Association diplomatic correspondent The rearrangement, which follows talks' between Britain, America, China and France, is purely provisional, as France, at the moment, is not physically able to take over the territory. French militarv experts will possibly he attached to the staffs of both administrations. The duration of the military Governments depends on the task to be done in disarming arid expatriating the Japanese. After this the French civil administration will take charge. The Chinese will occupy a small portion of Siam. according to the surrender terms proposed by General Ho Yingchin, commander in chief of the Chinese j forces, says the Associated Press correspondent.
