NEW TYPE OF RYEGRASS LUPINS FOR SHEEP FEED (0.C.) INVERCAHGILL, Tuesday The fact that a new type of ryegrass had been developed at Lincoln Agricultural College was mentioned by Mr R. H. Bevin, lecturer at the college, in the course of an address to a meeting of Southland farmers. Within the next two years quantities of seed should be available to farmers, lie said. The new variety was a cross between Italian and perennial ryegrass. Its growth habit was similar to that of Italian, but the introduction of the perennial strain ensured that it would live for several years longer than the Italian. Mr Bevin also gave informal ion about the use of a new variety of yellow sweet lupins, the fattening properties of which had proved equal to those of rape. He said it was not subject to any disease or blight. The college was building up a supply of seed sufficient for general use, hut at present only very •limited supplies were available. Another variety, the sweet white lupin, was also useful for sheep feeding. said Mr Bevin. but it was not equal to the sweet yellow variety for this purpose.
