COMING HOME
PRISONERS OF WAR RELEASE BY JAPANESE AIRCRAFT BEING SENT It is expected that two Douglas Dakota transport aircraft will leave Whenuapai airfield this week for Singapore, where they will begin the repatriation of New Zealanders who have been prisoners of the Japanese. A medical party will be carried to give aid to any of the prisoners who need attention. if arrangements proceed smoothly, it is possible that the first of the repatriated personnel will arrive at Auckland in about three weeks. Much depends upon the condition of the landing fields at Singapore, and upon arrangements for refuelling the aircraft. The aircraft will be flown by members of the R.N.Z.A.F. Transport Command, and will be fitted with stretchers. It is expected that the route will be by way of the Philippines and Borneo, where Brunei Bay will be the last base for the operation. Little is so far known about the character of the New Zealand prisoners. It is probable that the majority of them are airmen and civilians, and that there are also a few naval and army personnel.
