TRUMAN'S ENVOY
TALKS WITH CHURCHILL IMPORTANCE OF TOPICS LONDON, May 27 Important conversations, designed to strengthen arid perpetuate allround peacetime co-operation between America, Britain and Russia, started at Chequers yesterday between Mr Churchill and Mr Joseph Davies, President Truman's personal envoy, says the Daily Mail's political correspondent.
Mr Davies handed Mr Churchill a personal letter from President Truman, jn which the President outlined his determination to carry out Mr Roosevelt's policies in all respects.
President Truman expressed a wish to visit London at the earliest opportunity, the correspondent adds. In view of the fact that the'next meeting of the Big Three may occur before the British general election, Mr Churchill may invite Mr Attlee to accompany him at the meeting, thus ensuring continuity of British policy whatever the outcome of the poll. Mr Davies is expected to follow his week-end talks with Mr ChurOhill with an early meeting with the Foreign Secretary, Mr Eden.
While there are 110 official details about Mr Davies' mission, the London newspapers are commenting freely on it. They agree that one of his objects is to examine the prospect of a newmeeting between the British, American and Russian leaders. The Times notes the hint whitfh Mr Churchill gave in a speech on Saturday that he might be out of England during the coining general election campaign and says this may forecast an early meeting of the Big Three. At the same time, says the paper, Mr Churchill's remark seems to rule out London as the place of meeting, although this would be disappointing news. It was always a matter of regret that he never had a chance to welcome Mr Roosevelt, to London, and President Truman would be assured of a great reception. Equally, too, Marshal Stalin would be left in no doubt about Britain's admiration for himself and the achievements of his country.
