ARMY AND AIR FORCE OFFICERS KILLED IN ACTION Advice that their only son, Lieu tenant K. J. D. McCorkindale N.Z.S.C.. has been killed in action has been received by Mr and Mrs J. .J McCorkindale, of Christchurch. Lieutenant McCorkindale was educated at the Takapuna Grammar School and was accepted in 1940 as a cadet for % [{oval Military College at Dimtroon After his graduation he joined the Xeff Zealand Third Division in the Pacific In June, 1944, Lieutenant ..McCorkindale was sent to England to attend the Staff College at Camberley. On the completion of this coiirse he. joined the New Zealand Division in Italy.

Killed on air operations in the Middle East, Flying-Officer Brian Charles Robinson was the elder son of Mr and Mrs C. H. Robinson, of Ngongotaha He was 22 years of age and was educated at the Rotorua High School. Flying-Officer Robinson, who was enu ployed by the Lands and Survey Department, joined the Koyal New Zealand Air Force in May. 1942, and obtained a commission in England after completing his training in Canada. He was transferred to the Middle.East war theatre last September and was engaged on photographic reconnaissance over Greece and Yugoslavia. He later volunteered for special duty. His brother, Pilot-Officer Graham Robinson, is serving with the R.N.Z.A.F. in England. *

Reported killed on operations, FlightSergeant Ronald James McLean BeD was the elder son of Mr and Mrs Garnet G. Bell, of Matamata. FlightSergeant Bell was born in Matamats 22 years ago and was educated at the Matamata District High School and tin New Plymouth Boys' High School. He attended Auckland University College in 1941. After spending a year in the Army he joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force and left New Zealand for Canada in August, 1943. FlightSergeant Bell gained his wings in March, 1944, and went to England, where he flew in heavy bombers. Hi! brother, Sub-Lieutenant Peter Gar via Bell, was killed on naval operations las? October.

• Flight-Lieutenant J. T. McGreal, who has been reported killed on air operations. was the husband of Mrs J,. T. McGreal, of 16 Tranmere Road. Sandringham. and the eldest son of Mr and Mrs J. McGreal, of 21 Queen's Avenue, Mount Eden. He was 31 years of ace and was educated at Weymouth School and Sacred Heart. College. FlightLieutenant McGreal left New Zealand in May, 1942, and was a member of the Pathfinder Squadron of the Royal Air Force.

SOLDIERS IN UREWERA EXPEDITION SENT IN 1895 SURVIVORS IN AUCKLAND Today is the 50th anniversary of probably the last occasion on which soldiers were called out on account of a difficulty with Maoris. This was » police and military expedition to tie TTrewera Country, and two survivors of those who took part in it, Mr Edward Kennedy, of 163 Vauxhall Road, Devonport, and Mr R. J. Felton; have agreed to meet at the former's home to celebrate the occasion. Another survivor, Mr W. G. Wolilmann, of Epsom, formerly Commissioner of Police, is indis--posed and cannot be present. The expedition was sent heeause some Maoris interfered with surveyors who were running: the line of a road from Galatea to Lake Waikaremoana. The Seddon Government sent the Hoii. (later Sir) James Carroll to negotiate with tho objectors and decided at the same time to go on building the road. To protect the workijien it assembled s police party of one sergeant and six constables; with an commissioned officers and linen of the Permanent Artillery and Torpedo Corps, drawn from the Auckland and "Wellington establishments in equal numbers. The police were commanded by Inspector Emerson, and the military by Lieutenant J. E. Hume, who later commanded the Auckland Military-District with the rank of colonel. The party encamped near a remote village in the bush, where it remained nearly fow months. The Maoris caused no trouble and their relations with the troops were most cordial.

The expedition sent to the Urewera long after, in 1916, to arrest the prophet Rim, was composed entirely of police.

They were welcomed by the Auckland Education Board yesterday. ; Mr James Boyd, American vice-Consul at Wellington, has arrived to take up similar duties at the Auckland Consulate. which is in the charge of Mr Jon® C. Fuess, following the departure 0 the late Consul, Mr Hiram A. Boucber, on transfer to Rio de Janeiro.
