VICTORY HOLIDAYS POSITION OF SCHOOLS ANOTHER DAY SOUGHT A request that schools throughout New Zealand be given another day's holiday as part of the victory celebrations will be made to the Minister of Education, Mr Mason, by the Auckland Education Board, as a result of a decision of the board yesterday. Schools closed for their term vacation a day early to mark the surrender of the German forces in Italy. A second day's holiday should be granted in view of the declaration having occurred during the term vacation, said Mr C. S. Morris. Teachers had only one day's holiday against everyone else's two. said Mr \V. 1. Bmvyer.
Comment on the granting of the one day's holiday previously was made by the chairman, Mr G. K. Hamilton, who said that the Minister's announcement was broadcast, but- the board was not officially advised of his action. As a result the board was unable to confirm the hundreds of inquiries it received on the day of the announcement, and difficulties were experienced by contractors who supplied milk to schools through the alteration of their arrangements at short notice. The board decided to ask the Minister that on future similar occasions it should be advised of any decision as soon as possible.
