GAME OF BOWLS
CLDB CHAMPIONS MEET FEW PLAYERS UNDEFEATED Tho annual contest between the champion singles players of the various clubs affiliated to the Auckland Bowling Centre was begun yesterday morning on tile Carlton club's greens, when 34 representatives competed. This number was reduced to six at the end of five rounds of play.' Two of the players, ,T. 3. Martin (Carlton) and G. A. Deare (Mount Eden), went through undefeated, while the following had one loss apiece:R. Mc Master (Stanley). P. V. McGuire (Auckland Transport), N. Donaldson (Ponson by) and R. Smith (Helensville). Twenty-seven first-year champions took part in a competition on the Kemuera club's green similar to that of the seniors, and at the conclusion of five- rounds of play five players remain. Lysnar (Carlton) and Wiggins <Gre,v Lynn) were undefeated, and the following had one loss:—Gray (Otahuhu), Mosele.v (Devonport). C. Stitchhury (West End). Upon the completion of three rounds at each of the greens, the remaining players were grouped to continue for the fourth and fifth rounds. on both greens were excellent, the strong sunshine and absence of wind materially assisting the players to produce their best. As was expected, the recent winner of the New Zealand singles title, ,T. S. Martin (Carlton) performed well and he went through his four games undefeated, the only player to cause him undue trouble being H. Brookfield, an old-time champion of St. Heliers, who has returned to the game after a long absence. G. A. Deare, who has represented C'arlton in the past, appeared yesterday as a Mount Eden club champion, and he gave his usual steady display to win in the four rounds. Like Martin, be had a bye in one round. The surprise of the day was the showing of the Papatoctoe champion, W. H. Firth, who is a brother of the better-known bowler F. Firth, of Mount Albert. He won his first three games, two of his victims being T. T. Skoglund (Otahuhu) and N. Donaldson (Ponson b.v). He played steady bowls in these games, but then lapsed, victories being testistered over him by J. Higginson (Parnell) and R. Smith (Helensville) in the last two rounds. A fine struggle for supremacy took place in the last round when Donaldson and Skoglund met. The Otahuhu player countered Donaldson's good drawing hy accurate driving until near the end. when he fell away, and Donaldson ran out n comfortable winner. The prospects of the double champion, P V. McGuire, who won both the Onehunga and Auckland Transport clubs' titles this season, but is representing the latter, cluo, api>ear bright on his yesterday's display. He lost narrowly to Weller (Mount Albert) in the opening game, but then went on to win his next, four games b.v fair margins.
