AUCKLAND CUP FANCY BREEDING OF TE HINEMOA BY ARCHER The outcome of the racing at Te c Awamutu last Saturday has been that rr Te Hinemoa has become favourite for Cl the Auckland Cup, which is to be a decided on the first day of the Auck- fi land Racing Club's Summer Meeting at Ellerslie next Tuesday. In the Te Awa- n inutu Cup Te Hinemoa carried 9.4 and v won easily by a length in 2.6, a good a gallop on a track that was dead after rain. t Just before winning the Auckland Cup last year Lord Chancellor won the Te Awamutu Cup. carrying 9.13 and running the mile and u a-quarter in the course record time of 2.3. j In the Auckland Cup he carried 0.2, or lllb v less thau he had at Te Awamutu. In the r Auckland Cup Te Hinemoa has 8.9, which is ( 91b less than she had when she won the Te j Awamutu Cup. . 1 There were ten other Auckland Cup candidates besides Te Hinemoa in the Te Awamutu j Cup.They were Lou Rosa, Landveyor, Battle- j dress, Air Port, Merry May, Foxwyn, Water 1 Vixen, Foxsen, Mr Rosa and Town Survey, » and they wore all well back. With the exeep- v tiou of Mr Rosa, who is on the minimum and j could not go lower, all these horses are down ti in the weights under the lighter scale in the c Auckland Cup. Like Te Hinemoa. Lou Rosa a and Landveyor have 91b less, Merry May has o only 71b less, whereas Battledress and Water v Vixen are down 13lb and Air Port is down 141b. On figures Battledress, Water Vixen j and Air Port are the ones who come in better o than Te Hinemoa, but they will require to t show great improvement to beat her. So far Te Hinemoa has not raced beyond ' a mile and a-half and the question is whether J she is relatively as good at two miles. I here is no reason why she should not be as good because she has stout staying blood, on both sides of her pedigree. Te Hinemoa is a five- * year-old chestnut mare by Mr Standfast from i Prodice, by Catmint from Hyades, by Hymel- i tus from Straga, by Birkenhead from Witchet, j by Sir Lancelot front Elflock, by Nordenfeldt from Elfin, by Musket. Mr Standfast was ( bred in England by Buchan from Ciniia, by j Polymelus from Baroness La Fleche, by Ladas t from La Fleche, by St. Simon. He sired last j year's Auckland Cup winner, Lord Chancellor, t and is also the sire of Tea Rose, winner of the j Australian Derby this year. j Mr Standfast s sire, Buchan. was a horse , of great vitality and lived to the age of 23. . He was by Sunstar out of Hamoaze, a winner of £1355. Hamoaze had only four foals, all . colts —Buchan, Tamar, Saltash and St. Ger- , mans—but between them they won 25 races , and £37,401 in stakes. These four were sue- , cessful sires, St. Germans being head of the , winning sires' list in America in 3031. Saltash j did well in Australia, notable among his progeny being Strephon. Hamoaze was by Torpoint out of Maid rfT the Mist, dam also of Craig an Eran and Sunny Jane, by Cyllene out of that great mare Sceptre, by Persimmon. Buchan won 11 races worth £1(5,658, including the Eclipse Stakes twice. He also was first past the post in the Ascot Gold Cup, but was disqualified. Buchan was second in the Two Thousand Guineas, second in the Derby and third in the St. Leger. He sired the winners of over £3 70,000. The distaff side of Te Hinemoa's pedigree is also very good. It is very strong in Musket blood, famous in a staying connection. Prodice's sire, Catmint, was by Spearmint, by Carbine, by Musket. Catmint sired the dams of Catalogue (Melbourne Cup) and Don Quex (Wellington Cup). Further back in the nedigree there is a doubling of this blood, Nordenfeldt being a son of Musket and Elfin, a of Musket. This is breeding that will strengthen Te Hinemoa's claims to consideration in the Cup. PALMERSTON NTH., Wednesday An interesting gallop at Awapuni yesterday was that of Rink, Alethea, Don Quex and Broicfield over a mile and a-quarter in 2.19 2-5. The flags were 36 feet out and the track was good but not fast. The first two furlongs were run in 28 2-ss, with Rink setting the pace. The five furlongs was passed in 1.11, and as Rink reached the seven in 1.39 2-5. he -was joined by -Alethea, the pair finishing two lengths clear of Don Quex and Broiefield. who were together. It was a sound effort and drew attention to the prospects of Rink and Alethea in the Manawatu Cup on Saturday. Three Fitzherbert Handicap candidates, Sir Bradbury, Flying Ace and Kaitoa. galloped really well. Subdued led Sir Bradbury over the first two of five furlongs in 265, but in the last furlong Sir Bradbury drew away to score decisively in 1.4 2-5, a fine effort. Flying Ace and Kaitoa were on terms at the finish of six furlongs in 1.22 2-5. They ran the last five in 1.6 4-5, snd the last three in 40 3-ss, but could have gone faster. SEA BORN SCORES CUP TRIAL AT ADDINGTON (0.C.) CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday Sea Born, driven by C. King, who is likely to drive the pacer at Epsom, put up an excellent trial for the Auckland Cup when he held off Clockwork by a length in a good finish to the fast pacers' event, run over a mile and a-half at the Addington matinee on Saturday. Gallant Chief made the pace early from Sea Born, Bayard, Joan Conquest, Dusky Sound and Shadow Maid, with Pacing Power about ten lengths away last. Half a mile from the finish Sea Born was in the lead, and was joined by Shadow Maid, with Pacing Power still last. Sea Born, finishing full of running, scored nicely from Clockwork. ' Shadow Maid hold on well, and Dusky Sound and Gallant Chief headed the remainder. Pacing Power paced vigorously when asked a question and finished close up 6ixth. He looked as fit as any horse on the ground. The track was dead. Sea Bom's last halfmile in 1.3 4-5 was full of merit. BALLOT AT GORE RACE FOR SURPLUS HORSES (0.C.)
