In his preface to the New Zealand official-history of the Gallipoli camaign, Sir lan refers to the great attack on San Bail' on August 6, 1910, by lw New Zealand Mounted Rides and he New Zealand Infantry Brigade. "Brilliant leadership was shown by Lieutenant-Colonel A. Bauchop, commanding the Otago Mounted Rifles and Lieutenant-Colonel W G. Malone, Wellington Battalion during this battle, wherein Corporal Bassett, of the Divisional Signal Company, won a wellearned V.C.," Sir lan writes I lay verv special stress on the deeds of Bauchop and Malone. These, two heroes •were billed while leading their men with absolute contempt of danger—Bauchop after having captured what was afterwards known as Bauchop s Hill and Malone on the verv summit of Chunuk Bauchop and Malone were soldiers of great mark and. above all, fearless leaders of men._ Where so many, living longer, have distinction it is quite necessary that New Zealand 6bonld bear the names of these two gallant soldiers in tender remembrance."

INCIDENT AT HOTEL CHARGE OF ASSAULT ACCUSED SENT FOR TRIAL (0.C.) ROTORUA, Wednesday A sequel to an incident at Lake House Hotel, Rotorua, on the evening of November 9, was the appearance in the Police Court today of Arthur Grange, ■Ales manager, of Auckland, on a charge of assaulting Frank Powell, a barman, so as to cause him actual bodil.v harm Detective-Sergeant J A. White prosecuted, and accused was represented by Mr W W. Meek. Messrs A. J Holland and A. W. Downer. J.P.'s, were on the Bench. I)r E. H. Bridgeman said that Powell ?a» admitted to the Rotorua Hospital on November 9 at 6.35 p.m. For several days he remained in a semi-conscious condition and was unable to speak. His condition was serious, but he was improving. In witness' he was suffering from cerebral hemorrhage. He was likely to remain an inmate of the hospital for weeks or months. If he maintained his present progress, it would probably be Only a matter of weeks. Clarence Charles James, a soldier, gave evidence that just after Powell had closed the slide of the "guest" bar accused entered the hotel, knocked on the ilida and ordered a drink. Powell informed accused that it was after six o'clock and that he was not a guest of the house. As Powell was locking the door of the bar acused hit Powell on the face with his open hand, and later walked up behind him and struck him with both fists. Witness said he gave Powell and another barman assistance to get accused, who was struggling, out of the front door. After getting on to the road, Powell appeared very dazed, and he was supported _to return inside the hotel. Witness did not see any provocative action on the part of Powell. He was of opinion that accused was intoxicated. Evidence was also given by Albert Arthur Wyatt, a barman at the hotel, *ho said that accused was intoxicated, out in witness' opinion he knew what was doing. Accused pleaded not guilty, j>is defence, and was committed for trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court in Hamilton, bail being allowed to, accused's own recognisance of £IOO, one surety of £l5O.
