PENALTY FOR WINNING BALMORE REHAN D ICAPPED Following his win in the Avondale Stakes at Ellerslie. on November 11 Balmore was given a rehandirap of 101b by Mr W. P. Russell for the Tamahere Stakes at the Waikato Racing Club's Spring Meeting at To Rapa. Balmore ran and was second, carrying his rehandicap. L T nder the rules of racing it would appear that Balmore was not liable to a rehandicap. Rule 2<*>7 of the rules of racing states that no horse shall in any race carry extra weight (cither by way of penalty or rehandicap) in (a) a flat race for having won a hurdle race or steeplechase; (b) a hurdle race for having won a flat race or steeplechase; (c) a steeplechase for having won a flat race or hurdle race; (d) any handicap race for having won u weight-for-age race. Rule. J77 (I.) states that a weight-for-age race is any race other than a handicap race or a selling race, provided that: (a.) a maiden race: or (b) a hack race, or any other race confined to horses not having won a race or races of a specified value to the winner or a specified amount in stakes, which is run under other than the appropriate standard scale of weight-for-age, shall not be a weight-for-age rare. The Avondale Stakes was for two-year-olds, colts and geldings 8.0, fillies 7.9. It was not a handicap race or a selling race. The Tamahere Stakes was a handicap for two-year-olds FORM AT LEVIN NEW ZEALAND CUP HORSES (0.C.) WELLINGTON, Monday The form of the New Zealand Cup candidates who contested the Levin Handicap at Otaki on Saturday was not particularly enlightening. Unfortunately the track was saturated during Friday night and was too heavy for any reliable line to be obtained. Furthermore, Typhoon, the winner, was permitted to make an easy pace in front for a mile and this eliminated any prospect of the race being made a true test of stamina. The Great Autumn Handicap winner Lowry Bay did best of the cup horses, finishing second, slightly more than a length" behind Typhoon.. Lowry Bay has done a solid preparation, having been raced at regular intervals since last autumn, and his showing at Otaki with slb more than his cup weight was entirely satisfactory. He will be ridden at Riccarton by A. C. Messervy, who rode him in the Great Autumn Handicap last Easier. Being bred on a cross of Son-in-Law and Spearmint blood, Lowry Bay's pedigree cannot be faulted from a staying point of view. Don Quex's third in the Levin Handicap was a satisfactory )>erformance in view of the state of the ground. He moved up rapidly along the back to trail the leader, but conld make no impression on him in the last furlong and finally was cut out of second by Lowry Bay. During the day A. G. Waddell, who rides Don Quex in all his engagements, was suspended for one month, so a change of rider will be necessary for the New Zealand C"P- . . For the second year in succession unsoundness has affected Patu Po on the eve of the New Zealand Cup. He finished fifth in the Levin Handicap and was slightly lame when he pulled up. llis trainer, W. Morrison, stated that if Patu Po was no worse he would go to Riccarton this week, but his prospects of getting to the post in a fit and sound con ilition are not viewed hopefully. Unsoundness has troubled Patu Po throughout his career, but in spite of his disability he has run many fine races. His excellent second to Glenfalloch in the Wellington Handicap was viewed as a good trial for the New Zealand Cup. The performances of Rink and Langue d'Or, who finished seventh and ninth respectively in the Levin Handicap, could not be viewed as good cup trials. There was some exense for Rink, who prefers firmer ground, but Langue d'Or is a proved horse in heavy going. A report is current that Langue d'Or may run in the Riccarton Handicap on Saturday in preference to the New Zealand Cup. but this has not been confirmed. Travellers by the steamer express to Lyttelton tonight were Broiefield, Rink, Solver, Dunbar, Langue d'Or. Reversion, Don Quex, Affinity, Bridge Acre, Al-sirat, Voltaire, Tara King. Barrage, Montosorrie. Silvio, Gigli, Provider. Palissy, Royal Victor, Behave. Ann Bank, Black Simon, and Battle Lord.

LUCK OF RACING PETER BOUGHT FOR 240GNS There is a lot of money to be won with a ;aeehorse if he ig a good one and luck is on your side. For instance, Peter, winner of the Williamstown Cup on Saturday, was raced in South Australia by his breeder, Mr Malcolm Reid, until he was a four-year-oid. Peter won only one race and earned only £3'2o. Mr Reid tired of him. Lady Luck whispered to Mrs X>. W. Reddan thai Peter could be bought. She gave 2-40 guineas for him. He ha 6 rewarded her with £5755 10s in stakes. Peter is now a six-year-old.
